This winter Annie Mac Presents returns to Oxford with a special showcase of the freshest talent UK dance music has to offer. After a sell out show last time the tour was in Oxford it's set to be an epic night hosted by the queen of UK club culture the prodigious...Annie Mac.
Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1)
Host of dance music’s flagship radio show is Annie Mac AKA Annie MacManus. Her Friday night Radio 1 show from 7pm to 9pm goes out to over a million people in the iconic role of ‘officially starting the weekend’.
Born and bred in Dublin to a family immersed in musicality, Annie left home at 17 to attend Queens University in Belfast, where she was bitten by the clubbing bug after visiting the city’s legendary Shine club nights. Annie's show on Radio 1 began in July 2004, when, working as a assistant producer on Zane Lowe's show, she impressed Radio 1 bosses with her demos and her determination. Since her show began, Annie has gone from strength to strength, becoming part of the audio fabric of the nation on a Friday night. In September 2009 Annie began hosting the prestigious Friday night 7-9pm slot, taking over from the legend that is Pete Tong.
In addition to radio her TV work has seen Annie contribute regularly to BBC2's The Culture show, reviewing new music releases. She has worked for MTV2 presenting 'Gonzo' as well as helping to launch BBC Switch, the BBC's offering for 12-16 year olds. It was announced that Annie would front Switch, a brand new Sunday night Radio 1 show, and co-host a new weekly music TV show 'Sound' alongside Nick Grimshaw on BBC TWO every Saturday afternoon.
The 2 Bears
The Bears – Raf Rundell and Joe Goddard – first began crossing paths in DJ Booths in Brompton. Joe spends his time away from The 2 Bears as a producer, remixer, solo-artist and one fifth of an obscure outfit called Hot Chip! Fellow south Londoner Raf divides his time between club promotion, DJ outings as Greco-Roman Soundsystem, radio show hosting and artiste management.
The pairs DJ booth banter, soon led to a shared enthusiasm for house music and vague plans for a musical collaboration. So began several months of hanging out, making music ‘for the fun of it’ and ‘portamental’ arguments about obscure synths, that would wind up forming the 'Follow The Bears EP'. With a sound characterised by the hitherto untapped vocal stylings of Raf himself (Joe: ‘I didn’t know Raf could actually sing!’), the Bears have already received radio support from Annie Mac, Rob da Bank, Giles Peterson and Toddla T, drawn towards The 2 Bears 21st Century take on house, disco and everything in between. Their current release “Bear Hug” has been hailed as one of this summers dance floor smashes in Ibiza as well as being playlisted on Radio 1 and is out now on Southern Fried Records.
With his first musical experience of having had a violin placed in his hands, London based, Ray Foxx reflects fondly on the early musical experiences that led to his birth. The legacy of this moment can still be heard in many of his tracks. Like most teenagers raging against the machine, the fledgling Foxx then picked up the guitar and set to becoming a modern minstrel.
Spurred on by the advances in technology the idea of using computer based recording occurred to the young musician. Using the knowledge gained previously working freelance as a computer graphic designer, and the money, a hardware sampler was purchased and a home studio was born. Foxx's latest outing named The Trumpeter" has just got it's first airplay on BBC Radio 1 by Annie Mac.. Described by her as "Jazz Step ..it's funky, its kinda dub steppy, its jazzy, it's Ray Foxx.. ..don't you forget that "The Trumpeter"..!!", Annie is a huge supporter of this up and coming talent and extremely excited to have him supporting her at this show.
