The 347, Subliminal Music
PANGAEA (Hessle Audio, Hemlock)
Pangaea’s reputation as a forward-thinking producer and extremely talented selector is unrivalled. He is one of the founders of Leeds-born Hessle Audio (alongside Ramadanman and Ben UFO), the label we have to thank for debut releases from Blawan and James Blake. Since 2007, Hessle has been heralded by dubstep heads as the place to turn to for organic-sounding music that sounds punishing on the right soundsystem.
His production follows a very similar aesthetic and classics such as ‘Coiled’ have never lost their appeal. Last year, yet another sublime Hessle 12” was followed up the release of ‘Hex’ on Hemlock Recodings. Jungle-infused percussion that whipped a jarring vocal sample into shape made this a really special track to hear in the club. When he’s in the booth, expect dark flavours from anywhere between 120-140bpm - his FACT mix is without doubt one of the best in the series.
KILLAWATT (Wheel & Deal, Black Box)
Killawatt’s ascendancy in 2011 has been nothing short of spectacular, with his unique repertoire of beats rendering him one of the underground dubstep scene’s brightest talents. Spotted early by pioneering badman N-Type, Matt’s inaugural vinyl release on the Wheel & Deal imprint opened the flood gates and has since seen his productions find homes on a multitude of leading labels including Subway, Box Clever, Boka, New Moon and Black Box. Killawatt’s constructions often transcend genre dictated formulas and it is this versatility that has been turning heads, carving out his own refreshing and original take on sub-heavy music.
Inspired by the dark and punishing sounds of artists like Kryptic Minds and Dj Madd, Matt quickly progressed his style from his earlier dub and jungle influenced creations to the intricately percussive and texturally-rich rolling 140bpm riddims of which we are all now familiar. Key to his success and testament to his composition prowess has been heavy support on dubstep’s biggest platforms including Skream and Benga on Radio 1, JKenzo on 1extra and Youngsta, Distance and N-Type on their legendary Rinse.FM segments.
SLEEPER & DISTRICT (Chestplate) - 90 Minute Back2Back Set
Soon to need no introduction in this city, we've invited Sleeper to grace our decks once again, and this time alongside his Chestplate partner, District.
Sleeper’s music encapsulates what many love about dubstep’s traditional sound, placing a key emphasis on sub frequencies, minimal track composition and intricately constructed soundscapes and textures. His efforts were quickly signed by Chestplate recordings head honcho Dj Distance, and along with sometimes collaborator District they have joined elite company in releasing on the highly regarded and seminal label. Sleeper’s inaugural plate has created fevered excitement in the community with the colossal Scanners, Zombies and Narrow soon to be an essential component in DJ’s record bags.
Districts own take on bass music harks back to the genres earlier days, employing a stripped back and doom-laden attitude to beats and bass. 2011 see's District join the Chestplate Records family, a label led by one of the scenes originators DJ Distance. As well as working on individual musical projects, District's collaborative work with label peer and long-time friend Sleeper blends their shared vision on darker sounds, creating atmospheric and sub frequency-heavy rollers.
