6 Shore Road
21 years ago, the party started in a long gone nightclub in Perth, called Roxanne’s.... who could have ever guessed that this would ignite one of the most exciting, hedonistic, life changing, acid house rollercoaster rides imaginable ... a journey which navigated us all through countless, exhilarating, rights of passage, expeditions into the Naughty Forest … surviving one of the greatest, inspirational youth culture explosions of our lifetime and creating a unique musical journey and emotional soundtrack that will define a generation for all eternity.
21 years on (and still alive thankfully)... I am sitting here in Rhumba Towers, writing these words and trying to frame the message … the message that we are now reaching a very special place... it is the point that we have all lived and breathed so many times over those 21 years… the night is finally drawing to a close .. hands are held aloft, grins span from ear to ear, sweat drips from our brow... and we are all chanting and screaming as one... one more tune... One More Tune... ONE MORE TUNE!!
21 years on … and it is now time to celebrate both the 21st Birthday and significantly, the final ever Rhumba Club party.…
The Rhumba has always been about the people and the music. Without every one of you: the inspirationally loyal Rhumba Faithful, we would not be here today. It was each one of you that was responsible for forging that unique Rhumba atmosphere, from the early 1991 attendees all the way to the new Rhumba pioneers of today… the spine tingling, roof raising, heart pounding madness that was the dance-floor… each and every one of you always demonstrated the most amazing musical knowledge and held a true Balearic attitude in style and taste… each one of you, loyally following the club wherever it went… and without you all, it would never have reached it’s 1st Birthday, never mind it’s 21st.
Through many changes of venues and cities, spanning more decades than I would care to remember… The Rhumba Faithful have held this club together and made it one of the most unique and legendary clubs of our time. As I once previously said, you where the intricate silk stitching that stopped the arse falling out of the sparkling dancing trousers! To each and every one of you, we are eternally grateful … we salute you!
But we have one final request….
On Saturday 28 April 2012, we would ask that you join us one more time on the Rhumba dance-floor, and help us celebrate those 21 outstanding years of acid house reverie, madness, mischief and schoolboy tomfoolery …. We want the chants to ring loud … one more tune, One More Tune, ONE MORE TUNE!
And on this final night, the music must be in safe hands… we can afford no slip ups or foul play. We need a musical section that will reflect the past and bring us up to the present day… 21 years is a lifetime to cover and we must give every year of The Rhumba the attention and celebration it deserves. So, who has the safest hands to man the mighty Rhumba controls for this one last landmark journey… well, that one is easy:
If any one person has captured the mind, body and spirit of the Rhumba over the last 21 years, it undoubtedly has to be Dave Seaman. His amazingly crafted sets have sound tracked our dance-floor and house parties alike … In 21 years he has never failed to deliver perfection for us, every time and as far as The Rhumba is concerned, he is without doubt, a true Legend.
For this night, Dave is going to create a unique soundtrack which will encapsulate his 21 years as the unofficial Rhumba Club Resident … I am assured we can safely expect something very special.
Joining Dave at the controls, are two of Scotland’s greatest exports, originators and instigators of our beloved house music, Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle.
Slam have been close friends and Brothers of the Rhumba ever since the infamous Floatation night onboard the Unicorn in Dundee (now that’s a few hazy years ago)… and have single handedly done more for putting Scotland on the map than Sean Connery, Billy Connolly and shortbread put together.
They have always been a massive influence of ours, ever since their legendary nights in Fat Sams, the amazing night in the Tramway Theatre, Atlantis at the Sub Club, Pressure at the Arches and of course… the Slam Tent at T in the Park.
Slam are and will always be innovators in house music… and in tandem with Dave, have agreed to play a set on the 28 April to celebrate 21 years of our beloved musical history.
He who will bring gentlemanly style, sophistication and panache: Justin easily falls into the category of Rhumba Legend. He truly was one of the original Rhumba Pioneers, a true Balearic General; responsible for rocking the Rhumba dance-floors into submission over the years … He has been with us from the early days in Fat Sams through to the final days when we returned to Fat Sams … and pretty much all venues in between.
He has always been a favourite son of the Club and a great, great friend. His eclectic taste in music has been an inspiration to many over the years, and this Balearic attitude has always been in harmony with the Rhumba’s own discerning tastes. Welcome home Robbo …. Score cards at the ready!
Chris & James
He who will bring the party spirit in abundance: James (riding solo for this night) and partner Chris (plutonic of course), formed one of the greatest double acts in Acid House history … their exciting, power house sets tore the roof off Club Metro on many occasions … while the superb production work that littered their sets was as inspirational as it was lasting … Everything But The Girl’s – Missing and Isha D’s – Stay, being classic examples of classics!
He was a cornerstone of the Stress Record label, a close kindred spirit of the Rhumba, and a musical inspiration to our past.
James is not only a brilliant DJ, a power house party crusader and an absolute sterling geezer of the highest order… …he is also a self-confessed Rhumbateer himself!
Michael Kilkie & Zammo
Our very own Batman and Robin, Morcambe and Wise... (Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee??)… The Bumble Bee and the Pierrot Clown …. What would the Rhumba be, without these two instigators of mischief and tomfoolery in attendance. And who else could offer those life-long Rhumba Classics?… one more time.
Jon Pleased Wimmin’
He who will bring Glamour: Who can ever forget the style and grace that Jon brought to the Rhumba DJ box or those amazing, hands-in-the-air party sets he always delivered to the dance-floor? Jon’s DJ sets are legendary in Clubland, having regularly graced the controls of every super club in the country, including Renaissance, Cream, Miss Moneypenny’s and Ministry of Sound.
He has always been a favourite choice of the Rhumbateers and it is an absolute pleasure to have him returning for this last great party.
Going Back to our Roots Djs (Baxter Park Sunbather & Danny Walsh)
Joining the musical hurricane for this final night of debauchery, are two true carriers of the flame .. Baxter Park Sunbather and Danny Walsh. Their superb Roots night captures the heart and soul of the Rhumba, their impeccable musical taste and “digging deeper†mentality to musical set building will be a massive highlight to the night. It will be an absolute pleasure to welcome these two Acid House Generals into the mix … for One More Tune!
Residents to the front
The Rhumba Residents have always played an integral part of the club’s history… gelling the night together and lubricating the musical engine of each night. For this final party, we welcome back our fantastic team of Alan Dobson (Muzika), Nikki Flame (Heartland FM), Wilson (Bothan Spynet)
So beautiful people, the night may be drawing to a close... but a lifetime of amazing memories are crying out for a final chapter to the Great Story… and there is the small matter of One Big Bloody Acid House Party to be had……..
