in aid of SOAS Detainee Support Group
Against Home Office guidelines, over 2,600 people, nearly all of them asylum seekers, are locked up in detention camps and prisons in Britain without trial, without time limit and with no automatic right to bail. This includes pregnant women, children, victims of torture and those suffering from mental health problems, all of whom are systematically denied access to adequate medical attention and legal advice.
The SOAS Detainee Support Group seeks to empower individuals and families in detention. Through regular visitation, they aim to provide emotional and practical support, including linking detainees with medical and legal professionals and providing resourses for people to set up their own campaigns. They also help to supply basic necessities such as nappies for babies and toiletries, which detainees are often unable to access.
To raise money for these visits and to raise awareness of these people’s plight, SOAS Detainee Support Group brings you Release: an eclecticly-programmed night of cutting edge electronic dance music at Shoreditch’s small but perfectly-formed Herbal. With Breaks, Electro, Drum & Bass, Grime, Dubstep and Hip-Hop, there’s a diverse range of music for people from all different backgrounds, united by a common thought.
Manchester’s highly-acclaimed grime/hip-hop fusionist Virus Syndicate headline with a straight-up DJ + MC set, showcasing their immense lyrical prowess and bass-heavy, futurisitc sound, with more grime from Vectra, and ribshaking dubstep riddims courtesy of Chefal (from legendary, pioneering dubstep/grime pirate radio station RinseFM). Yeastie Boyz serve up some block-rocking hip-hop flavours, with more rap and club bangers from rising scratch-a-holic Tru Touch. First lady of the breaks scene Janette Slack will be showing why she’s the name on everyone’s lips at the moment, with more breakbeat mastery from the talented Tom Real – winner of the Breakspoll 2007 Best Remixer award alongside his production partner The Rogue Element. Tough fidget house and electro will be catered for by Maximal’s Ben Gomori, with junglist legend Ray Keith finishing off the proceedings with some dark and dirty DnB like only he knows how.
You’d be hard pressed to fine such a diverse line-up of top-draw talent in London – especially on a Thursday night...for just £5! Come join us for heavy tunes, good vibes and a big rave for a bigger cause...
