IAN ALLAN - Upstairs
Underground Disco, 80's Boogie, Downtempo Beats, Rare Groove, Funk 45s, Soul, Funky Breaks,
Broken Beat, Old Skool Hip Hop, Nu Jazz, Deep & Soulful House
Acquiring his first set of turntables at fourteen & a first residency at sixteen Ian Allan has become somewhat of
a veteran on the Northern DJ circuit at the age of only 32. With sixteen years of professional experience Ian has
played in countless venues.
Starting in local bars in the mid nineties Ian began to learn his trade, shaping & perfecting the performances you
hear today. As the years went by residences became a regular thing but it was the chance meeting at the turn of
the century with fellow DJ Neil Corking which became a unique turning point in both careers.
The pair, due to differing but complimenting styles, formed a partnership & soon began securing residencies in
the areas premier bars. Long stints at Spensleys (Middlesbrough) & The Dickens (Middlesbrough) became very
popular with the local crowds but it was their three year residency at Bar Zantia (Middlesbrough) which really
brought them to the foreground. Playing to over 700 people every Saturday night this quickly became one of the
most talked about & memorable pre club venues in the area.
This catapulted Ian to the front of many a promoters mind & it was no surprise when, he was offered residencies
at world renowned clubs Gatecrasher One & Bed (Sheffield) playing his unique brand of back room music. Faced
with huge crowds Ian revelled in the opportunity & had by his own admittance the best moments of his career to
More high profile sets followed in established venues such as The Arena, Cornerhouse, Purple Onion, Onyx,
Keys (Middlesbrough), Stereo, Attic, Sea, 55° North (Newcastle), Atlantic, Joes, Size, Seen (Durham),
Revolution (Harrogate) Hide (Yarm) & corporate involvement with Toni & Guy & JJB Sports. This all culminated
in playing a debut north of the border in Edinburgh & international sets in Ibiza & Dubai performing at the world
renound clubs 360 & Chi. Coupled with promoting his own event ‘Lazy Days’, working alongside one of the worlds
leading brands – Ministry of Sound & performing with DJ’s as diverse as Jazzy Jeff to Lenny Fontana Ian has
had his fair share of success.
Taking influences from legendary producers such as Larry Levan & Tom Moulton right through to today’s hero’s
of Dimitri from Paris & Joey Negro Ian’s strength lies in his musical knowledge, depth & programming. Whether
it is an eclectic underground disco, 80's boogie, rare groove, funk, breaks, broken beat, old skool hip hop, nu jazz,
classic & contemporary soul set or a specialist deep & soulful house workout you can always guarantee a party
whenever he mans the turntables.
This was illustrated by the inevitable attention of the worldwide media with International DJ Magazine featuring
him in their coveted Raw Talent competition. Beating off thousands of entrants Ian has the distinction of being
one of the very few who have been included twice in this industry leading contest. Further achievements include
internet based MDM choosing his eclectic set to win their global contest & gaining runner up placements in
the Ministry of Sound - Donate to Dance mix battle, Bodytonic’s Electric Picnic Festival DJ competition &
National promotion - Uber’s DJ contest.
Success has also taken Ian to the airwaves & his first residency with the nationwide Galaxy Network flourished.
With eleven guest mixes in total Ian was a fixture on the last Friday of each month until the “The Friday Night
Soundbite” finally came to an end.
Now with the expansion of his promotions company – Lazy Days Music Ian is as busy as ever residing & playing
in some of the North East’s most prominent venues, there are definitely exciting times ahead!
