JUSTIN MARTIN - dirtybird, San Francisco
As the late Oscar Wilde once said: “life is too important to be taken seriously”, an ethos that Justin Martin is sticking with despite achieving soaring success over the last six years as a producer and international DJ. Justin initially pricked the ears of the electronic music community in 2003 with his first record „The Sad Piano‟ on Ben Watt‟s Buzzin‟ Fly label. Everyone in the electronic music food chain got involved, from the A list DJs like Derrick Carter and Pete Tong that were playing the track, to the international music press that were
raving about it. It even translated to the German underground, with Poker Flat licensing it for Steve Bug‟s „Bugnology‟ compilation. Like someone that goes bowling for the first time and gets five strikes and a turkey, Justin couldn't really have hoped for a better entrance.
Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground and mentored by fellow super producer Claude Vonstroke, Justin was intrinsically involved with the development of dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases. Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs which flaunted a very unique sound and garnered still more respect among fellow DJS and heavyweight‟s of the scene.
As well as his formidable arsenal of original productions, Justin is now equally known for his collaborations with his brother Christian as The Martin Brothers, producing such hip-hop influenced hits as „Stoopit‟ and „Dum‟. Justin has also made his mark remixing such bona fide classics as Radiohead‟s „Nude‟, Marshall Jefferson‟s „Mushrooms‟, and TG‟s „Revox‟, firmly establishing himself as the man to make big tracks even bigger.
Demand for Justin‟s skills behind the decks has skyrocketed with his bookings schedule basically crammed to capacity for the next 4 months. With bookings confirmed everywhere from Exit Festival (Belgrade), to Sonar (Barcelona) to Panorama Bar (Berlin), Justin‟s diary is reading like the dreams of a professional raver. Stateside he continues to be a regular fixture at the dirtybird events in San Francisco and beyond.
Further nods to his skills as a DJ and tastemaker are apparent in his growing discography of mix compilations, most notably his own "Chaos Restored‟ mix series on the prestigious "Buzzin‟ Fly label.
Music journalists typically describe Justin‟s sound as „melodic and tough‟ with his music encapsulating both melody and emotional depth yet always with enough undeniable ass shaking properties to translate to the floor.
“I'm always trying to find music for my DJ sets that rattles sound systems, but still has enough melody and interesting texture to expand your mind even if you‟re sitting at home on a snowy or rainy day.”
In 2009, production wise Justin has a few EPs scheduled to drop on dirtybird, a remix for Freerange, and a DJ mix for Ministry of Sound‟s „Underground series‟ compilation. He remains as enthusiastic as ever to be involved in the scene. When recently questioned by Resident Advisor on what he‟d be doing if he wasn‟t a DJ or dance music producer he just replied: “Wishing I was a DJ or music producer.”
By all accounts it‟s hard to tell him to wipe that smile off his face.
LORENZO BARTOLETTI - Mindshake, Italy
At a very early age, Lorenzo Bartoletti was heavily influenced by music. One of his biggest influences came from his very own brother who collected vinyls from an array of different genres. From pop to rock to jazz to blues, nothing was out of bounds for Lorenzo. Realizing that music was his passion, he took up classical guitar and music lessons. For 6 years Lorenzo was a student of music. But it wasn’t until he stepped foot in a club that his musical dream began to unfold. He was completely fascinated with the figure of a dj and his way to interpret the music and move crowds. So in the summer of 1999 Lorenzo took various jobs and began to save for a pair of Technic 1200 and a mixer. He began honing his skills and was a regular at the record store. Lorenzo quickly picked up the skill and in no time was playing clubs all over the city.
In 2008 he decided it was time to make the next step in his career and began to experiment with productions. Soon thereafter he received the attention of labels such as Suara, Sk Supreme Records, Viva Music, Material Series, Loco, and many more. His productions have received support from the biggest names in the industry and this comes as no surprise. He has become one of the leading tastemakers in the Italian scene and is respectfully named one of the artists to watch.
As the years went by, Lorenzo gained huge support and began to receive offers from all over Italy and Europe and he played in some of the most prestigious venues such as Tenax (Firenze, IT), Frau Marleen (Torre del Lago, IT), Tartana (Follonica, IT), Gasoline (Milano,IT), Altromondo Studios (Rimini, IT), Kama Kama (Camaiore, IT), Rashomon Club (Roma, IT), Ovest Club (Oristano, IT), Changoo Club and Klubber's Day (Madrid, ES), Club 4 (Barcelona, ES), Amphitheatre Club (Rhodes, GR), Jungla Club (Split, Croatia), Isu Club (Leicester, UK), Deprived Party (Leeds, UK), Skybar (Windsor, Canada), Rise Club (Boston, USA), Nocturnal (Miami, USA). From 2011 Lorenzo is one of the new artists of Paco Osuna’s label, Mindshake Records. Lorenzo is also the 50% of the important project called Alfa Romero along his partner and friend Marzio Aricò aka Prudo.
Dela - Mindshake, Milwaukee
Having been intrinsic in EDM culture since the early-nineties Dela’s deep-rooted passion for music has always been in constant forward-motion. Early appreciations for the sounds and influences of Detroit, Chicago, and Berlin have paved a way for a continual focus on innovation and musical progression. This developing artistic sense has only been matched by his personal determination to grow hand-in-hand with the music itself.
Today, as Paco Osuna’s label partner for Mindshake Records (based in Barcelona, Spain), Dela finds his passions immersed in the cutting-edge of the world’s top techno and house arenas. However it is his love affair with the studio and DJ booth where Dela is able to express these passions artistically. As a producer, his signature concoctions of percussive and groove-based tech house has impressed aficionadi as found on labels like Colombia’s ‘The Room’ and Argentina’s ‘Pild Records’. As a DJ, his sets have graced dancefloors at noteworthy venues home and abroad… most notably appearing on headlining and featured bills at major institutions like Space (Miami), Beta (Denver), et al… and countless other events and label showcases throughout the globe.
His music will undoubtedly suit it’s playing field - spanning anything from deep and sexy avant house to the jack and bounce of peak hour tech house or techno. A keen sense for aesthetics and an ability to adapt are what make Dela who he is to this music. Always studying. Always looking forward. And most importantly… always giving back.
