TIM WRIGHT aka TUBE JERK (live!)
Falling between the cracks has been Tim Wright’s specialty. Turning his hand to just about anything from techno, electro, garage, hip hop, punk and beyond, this York based multi-genre-ist fuses sounds and styles with amazing diversity. Going against the grain of current musical trends, his music has often been described as years ahead of its time, or, simply ignored by the music press and fashionistas.
He has been the producer of some of the most ground-breaking electronic dance music since the early 1990s, working under an array of pseudonyms. Throughout his career, he has attracted the support of some of the key electronic record labels of the last fifteen years with album and single releases on Mute Records, Tresor, General Production Recordings, PIAS, Sativae, remixing artists from Scorn, through Crisitian Vogel to Laurent Garnier and Goldfrapp.
Recording from 1993 under the guise of Germ, Wright released pioneering experimental electronica years ahead of the competition, whereby he was described as "one of the most influential, under-recognized forces of innovation in the European experimental electronic music scene" (Sean Cooper, All Music Guide). Glitchy, bass heavy and unpredictable, Germ offers ghostly pre-echos of the current dubstep and minimal genres.
Leaving Germ behind, Wright became the founder member of the successful Sand project, which runs concurrently with Wright’s solo dancefloor ventures, both as Tube Jerk and under him own name. These have spawned many releases, including three full length albums.
‘Fold’ (Pias/ILL) shows off his phenomenal production skills, ranging from the abstract to the accessible, from the subliminal to the brutal. The second album, ‘Shift’ (Sativae), further brought forward the club ethos within Wright’s work, combining rhythmic beats with the deep dubby bass grooves ensuring that the album was a fast selling hit.
His last full length album ‘Thirst’ (Novamute) expanded upon Tim's trademark sound: from electro-techno (Kick The Door In, Shine) and punk 4/4 filth (Oxygen, Control Freak) to a full-on experiment in drum'n'bass (Killergod). The 11 tracks developed the theme explored within his Novamute singles, combining apparently polar styles and genres with startling effect. Inspired in equal parts by electro, techno, jazz, ragga and the bounce of UK garage, ‘Thirst’ is a unique proposition. Varied and original, the album is a perfect summation of Wright’s rich and diverse sound.
His live shows, both as Tube Jerk and as Tim Wright, are explosive and taken him all over the world – from Europe to Japan, Australia and the US, with notable dates including Sonar by Night 2004, Transmusicales, Rex (Paris), the Liquid Rooms (Tokyo), Fabric (London) and, at Tresor (Berlin) – which the label themselves cite as one of the historic performances at their legendary club.
