Following Kapital’s triumphant 2012 return with Kompakt label-boss Michael Mayer in March, the quality guests continue with another head honcho, this time the Wagon Repair label co-founder Mathew Jonson.
Hailing from Canada’s west coast, Jonson had that most clichéd of DJ upbringings, learning classical piano and playing drums in a marching band, while his father’s work with sound technology gave him access to the wonderful world of synthesizers. At 19 he met Tyger Dhula, Danuel Tate and Colin de la Plante and formed the Modern Deep Left Quartet - playing improvised jazz on a variety of instruments - which eventually morphed into Cobblestone Jazz. The collective formed a club residency and Jonson started producing more electronic music, gaining momentum with releases alongside Luciano and on Kompakt during fledgling trips to Europe. This culminated in a move to Berlin in 2005 and the establishment of Wagon Repair with Jesse Fisk, Graham and Adam Boothby, Frank Meyerhofer and Konrad Black.
Since then he has littered the ever-changing techno scene with key releases via his own name, with quartet Cobblestone Jazz and as Midnight Operator alongside his brother Nathan (Hrdvsion); as well as building a reputation as one of the finest live electronic performers around. He’ll be bringing this lauded live setup to the Kapital in May, in order to recreate his unique brand of deep, dark, melodic techno.
