James Cooper is part of Melbourne's LAB trio, the brains behind one of Australia's most respected underground parties. Through the combination of hard work, dedication and passion, LAB has been running for a solid 6 years and has exposed a list of pivotal artists in the world of modern Techno such as; Someone Else, Butane, Ion Ludwig, Maetrik, Mark Henning, Elon, Cesare Vs Disorder, Seph, Heinrichs and Hirtenfellner and the list goes on. With many of these being debut tours, LAB has undoubtedly been a key contributor to educating the Australian market on high quality, non-commercial dance music. Expanding their horizons, 2011 saw the first launch of LAB in Berlin and at Burning Man Festival in the US.
Cooper's roots lie in the sounds of Samba, Classical, Jazz and later Hip Hop. But it wasn't until discovering turntables that he bounded into the rhythms of intelligent Techno and House. The absorption of early Techno influences such as Cari Lekebusch and Adam Beyer, accompanied by a high admiration for Ambient Electronica, namely Boards of Canada, Autechre, KLF and the like, contributed to Cooper's fundamental understanding of quality electronic music. To him, DJing is not about ego, but an ever evolving adventure through the intricacies of sound and its marriage to people.
Over 7 years on the vinyl has seen Cooper support many iconic names in the industry such as Matthias Kaden, Paco Osuna, Alex Smoke, Jeremy P Caulfield, including recent performances in Shanghai, New York, Fiji, Burning Man, Rainbow Serpent Festival and at Berlin's the world renowned Watergate. Currently based in Berlin and running numerous parties, Mr. Cooper is finally turning focus to releasing his production.
