My girl came up to me the other day, and was all like, “Jimmy, I heard about a
festival, Putrid Rays or something? What’s that all about?”
I paused, put one hand inside my belt buckle, and I explained;
“Honey, it’s called the Future Days Festival, April 13th at White Trash, and you
know what it’s all about?
Texas. Fuckin’ Texas and The Strange Boys.
How I see it, the Texan Government has been masterminding a secret selective
breeding programme using the best psychedelic songwriters of the Texan tradition
(Lightnin’ Hopkins, Phil Ochs, Townes van Zandt, The Moving Sidewalks, Thirteenth
Floor Elevators, Golden Dawn, Etc) to genetically manipulate an unstoppable band
that will make whole populations swoon under their control.
The result of this experiment is The Strange Boys: snotty punks mixed with
snivelling geniuses, all under the guise of man models. Not only that, but The
Strange Boys manage to do it all with the panache of laid back southerners, a hint of
aggression and the flavour of tobacco.
Now government conspiracies get me all ornery, so I got my friends in the Future
Days posse to help me put together a bunch of competent warrior musicians to try
and thwart this threat – first off, my personal right arm in combat, The Gunpowder
Temple of Heaven. I’m hoping our voodoo skills, bloodlust and swamp mayhem can
combat The Strange Boys’ sultry coolness.
They also equipped me with Thüringen’s finest rancid meat, Zentralheizung of
Death (des Todes). We got some secret information that adding STONER DOOM
SURF ROCK to The Strange Boys like sprinkling salt on slugs. I’m certain
Zentraleheizung of Death will gurgle, pop and fizz in the same way and leave a
gross little puddle on the stage no matter what.
Delta Love will also join the fray. I don’t know if they are really the violent type,
but their laid back Fat Possum styled blues riffs will at least mesmerise The Strange
Boys long enough for me to search their tour van.
And an army runs on its belly so our chefs for the night will be the King Khan and
The Shrines Dj Team, serving up tasty platters all night long, in both 7” and 12”
After I’d finished telling my girl about this amazing show, she promptly had hooked
up her guitar to the closest amp she could find, and was also ready to die at the hands
of rock’n roll. Just remember, if you’re afraid to come to this show,
THE TERRORISTS HAVE ALREADY WON.
