Providing a safe-haven from cliché, stereotype and GaGa, POKE is an independently-run club night, originating in Newcastle, that recognizes the oft-ignored truth that many gay guys and girls appreciate music of a rather less commercial bent.

Sure, we love Madonna and Scissor Sisters (of course we do), but we also dig The Cure, tUnE-yArDs, Bjork, The Smiths, Grandmaster Flash, Arcade Fire, Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Kraftwerk, Goldfrapp, The Ramones, Purity Ring, Los Campesinos!, Roots Manuva, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wild Beasts, 2 Bears, The Gossip, Kelis, Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, Emiliana Torrini, Kate Bush, Eugene McGuinness... (you get the idea).

And, yes, we know all about Popstarz, but, to be honest, we believe true indie nights require a little more of an intimate, rough n' ready feel, so that's why we're setting up shop at the wonderful Waiting Room in Stoke Newington.

So if you're sick of the same old nonsense being pumped at you by all the gay bars, come and bend to our beat instead.
