CROWDFUNDING INITIATIVE
Substrata 1.2 is an ambitious project - we have artists coming in from
all parts of the world. We believe bringing international talent to
our town helps facilitate the exchange of ideas and culture while
creating a unique experience for each participant.

Substrata Festival is small, and we plan to keep it that way - there
are already enough big events catering to the masses. What we do is
special, unique and meaningful. Every penny we raise will go towards
paying for artists fees, travel costs, printing/promotion, equipment
rental, etc – in other words, meet our budget!

This year we are adding two daytime free educational events, making
the event accessible to anyone who wishes to attend, even those who
cannot afford the evening program full ticket price. We hope those of
you who follow the sound arts community around the world unable to
join us physically, will at least be able to contribute – even a small
$1 donation counts. Help us make it happen!

1.2 FULL-PROGRAM

DAY 1: FRIDAY, AUGUST 3

A night exploring the breadth of the spectrum of amplified sound, from
the acoustic and environmental, the synthetic and processed, to the
timbres hidden in radio signals and the distortion of electricity
itself. Stylistically as varied in their approaches as the sound
sources and the materials used to sculpt them, international artists
in their own right, over decades of work all three composers have
established themselves as vanguards of their form. Expect an evening
of both extreme dynamics and subtle susurration, of immersion in
nuanced tonalities and the lashing of dissonant cascades.

_ Pioneering UK artist SCANNER performs live in the Pacific Northwest
for the first time in a decade and presents his immersive works, which
traverses the experimental terrain between sound, space, image and
form.

_ Australia’s mixed media artist and curator LAWRENCE ENGLISH presents
selections from his latest magnum opus “The Peregrine.”

_ Portland’s DANIEL MENCHE showcases his beautiful audiovisual works,
better described as “highly textural emotional rawness.”

DAY 2: SATURDAY, AUGUST 4

The second night of Substrata hosts styles of significant variance
enough to defy simple classification, nonetheless all overlapping in
regards to being explorers of the vague, crepuscular, immersive,
deeply sonorous lower frequency and minor key tonalities of the
mysterious and the subaqueous, of the diminishing twilight, the
fog-filled night. Where their conceptual territory may overlap, the
sagacious ear marks each style as distinctly as their individual
technique and approach. A night of the guitar’s roar buffeted by
tradewinds of electronic processing, of muffled low frequencies rising
on buoyant piano melodies, of clockwork rhythms and electronic thrum.

_ Legendary Chicago outfit PAN•AMERICAN makes an ultra rare appearance
to perform live at Substrata. This marks their first US performance in
over half a decade. Seattle’s KillingFrenzy will provide live visuals,
complementing a very unique (and highly anticipated) engagement.

_ Montreal-based sound artist TIM HECKER returns to present his
critically-acclaimed ’Ravedeath, 1972”.

_ Vancouver’s LOSCIL debuts new piano-based compositions, performing
live with Seattle’s own Kelly Wyse (Pollens/i3O/Orcas) on the piano.

_New Mexico transplant (now local Seattle resident) WIDESKY makes his
Substrata debut.

DAY 3: SUNDAY, AUGUST 5

_Auditory field trip and workshop (conducted by Lawrence English &
Robin Rimbaud). A selected group of attendees will travel along with
the performing artists to the beautiful Puget Sound for a day of
hiking, field recording, exploring and learning.
