The VENUS BUSHFIRES
Growing up in Nigeria The Venus Bushfires is a collective which I am the only constant member. I play the hang (a metallic melodic percussive instrument) as well as various African drums.
Inspired by musicians such as Fela Kuti, Kate Bush, Björk, Sun Ra and Gong to name a few. Musically I love to dance between the tribal and the futuristic. As a child my parents encouraged me to sing Nigerian folk songs and at school my friends encouraged me to sing 80’s style rap and synth pop. Actually, the truth about the latter is I felt I had to because I learnt the hard way that anything else would be social suicide. Nowadays I’m really into writing about love and politics, and those are the main recurring themes of these works.
Currently working on second album in summer 2012 to follow up first ‘Foolosophy’, which I released in 2007. For 2nd album been recorded songs with James Lewis (Cajun Dance Party, Arctic Monkeys) and Richard Olatunde Baker (percussion for Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke), Andrew Theakstone (Get Cape Wear Cape Fly) plus recorded songs for new Sony PlayStation game Okabu.
Spoken word poet with a wonderful sense of rhythm, mixing the style of a traditional bard with that of a hip-hop lyricist, engaging and thought provoking. Has performed at various venues and events including the Round House, Sadler’s Wells, Lilian Bayliss Theatre, Word4Word, Bang Said the Gun and Tongue Fu. Winner of Soul Baby Live Award 2011.

Born in Zimbabwe during war of Independence and brought up moving country to country. From the Desert of Africa, to the depths of the Orient, this young lady has lived there.
A life lived sometimes painfully but always always overcoming adversity, and always lived fully! Anna’s music pulls no punches, talking about the hurts, and the happiness. Sharing her realisation that belief in yourself is paramount. This lady has something to say and a big unique voice to say it.
