Where to start when talking about a DJ such as Erol Alkan? You could talk of him breaking talent in the UK unlike any other, through his seminal and genre defining club night Trash. A legendary Indie night that ran in London for 10 years, that broke the Elecro Clash sound, ushered in the Garage Rock revival, brought mash ups to the dance floor like no other and gave debut performances to acts such as Justice and 2 Many DJs. A club night where the freaks, fashionistas, real music heads would mix with visitors such as Grace Jones, Lily Allen, Razorlight, The Strokes and The White Stripes or regulars such as Bloc Party, The Klaxons and Ash.
You could talk of the dance music authority; Mixmag naming him DJ of the Year – preceded by Paul van Dyk, with Armin Van Buuren the year after.
Or of the artists he’s worked with. Remixing The Chemical Brothers, Mylo, Justice, Hot Chip, Death From Above 1979, Scissor Sisters, Felix Da Housecat, Interpol, Metronomy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Daft Punk. Or his skills as a producer, working with bands; The Mystery Jets, Late of the Pier and The Long Blondes. Not forgetting his own productions and studio efforts, such as 2010’s smash ‘Lemonade’ with long time collaborator Boys Noize to this years new release ‘Roland Rat’ and ‘Brain Storm’.
Or being personally asked by Daft Punk and Madonna to DJ for their live shows.
The list goes on and on..
He’s quintessentially ‘the’ DJ that brought guitars to the electronic music dancefloor, always staying true to his Indie sensibilities, whilst lighting up techno clubs unlike any other.. Tonight we welcome him to San Francisco for a very rare intimate club appearance, to Obey the Kitty at Vessel.
