What is a subtlemob?
Imagine walking through a film, experienced on headphones, played out by you and hundreds of strangers.
Subtlemobs are like invisible flashmobs, there is no spectacle, the audience merge into the everyday world
around them. Two days before the event you are sent an MP3 file of the soundtrack. It is made up of a specially
composed, richly cinematic score, mixed with narrative and instructions for you to follow.
'a deliberate slap in the face to the flashmob phenomena - it reshapes the cultural landscape.'
- Paul Currion
'our broken voice’ explores trust and suspicion in public spaces. . .
something terrible has happened . . . hearing fleeting glimpses of the aftermath, you make your way through
broken shards of the preceding moments, trying to work out how the people around you fit into the story,
trying to work out your own role, and looking for somewhere to point the finger.
In ‘our broken voice’ there are four possible soundtracks you could receive, each one telling the story from a
different perspective, each one with a different sequence of instructions for you to carry out. Sometimes your
actions will lead to meetings with strangers, sometimes you become the performer of a story that someone
else is hearing. There is nothing embarrassing or dangerous, in fact you’ll almost just be playing yourself.
