From The Wharf Revue’s beloved Jonathan Biggins comes the hilarious new comedy Australia Day, playing at Riverside Theatres from Wednesday 22 to Saturday 25 August.

This wickedly funny new play from the stalwart of political satire, Jonathan Biggins, takes aim at our favourite day off work…Australia Day! It’s a hilarious parody about the bungling grassroots politics of a small town Australia Day Planning Committee as they tackle the really big issues: Does a sausage sizzle code as monocultural? And should the special needs kids be forced to perform their dance routine on the national day? For the members of the Australia Day committee in the small country town of Coriole, the issue of cultural identity is prickly to say the least.

Drawing on his own experiences as an Australia Day ambassador, Biggins takes a swipe at secular traditions and national holidays with fearless wit and good Aussie humour.

“Australia Day is a play about the committee organising Australia Day… It could be anywhere in regional Australia…. I was inspired by the fact I was an Australia Day ambassador… a lot of the incidents in the play have been drawn from the local mayor, the local dance academy, the local citizenship ceremony… Basically it’s a cast with comic ensemble strength… it’s in the great Australian tradition of self deprecating comedy,” said Playwright Jonathan Biggins.
