The sanitized techno dance party is dead, long live HUGO BALL!
Hugo Ball is the new hedonistic monthly dance party which launched at Chicago's Smart Bar this September. A very special guest from Detroit, Norm Talley, will play the second Ball on Saturday, October 20 along with residents Justin Long and Sevron.
We believe that art is highest when it is revolutionary! Hugo Ball djs are experimentalists, unrestrained by fashion and form, who play a wild a mix of diverse music recontextualized in the tradition of Chicago's finest expressive turntablists. We believe that the pure club experience is about freedom of personal expression, both in the booth and on the floor. Hugo Ball dancers are not image driven consumers of life-style, but kinetic artists and joyous servants to the mother beat! We believe that dance music like all art is political. Hugo Ball gives shelter from the corrupt priorities of the masses where the enlightened are free to revel - all are welcome, we are not a boutique culture! Chicago is home to some of the world’s finest unassisted vinyl djs, edit maestros and machine musicians. We believe that house is Chicago's roots music and that it is our duty to shine a light on the culture. Hugo Ball cares not for the carpetbaggers, sanitizers and cultural dilettantes!
Hugo Ball is a spin-off of respected Chicago DJ Justin Long's 12-year Dotbleep residency at Smart Bar, which held its final mass this August. Justin will play Hugo Ball each month alongside carefully selected out-of-town roots performers and Hugo Ball residents Nathan Drew Larsen, Sevron and Samone. Hugo Ball will often feature all locals, drawing from the talented Chicago djs and machine musicians beloved and cherished by the world but sometimes subjugated at home. Hugo Ball is curated each month by Justin Long and Nathan Drew Larsen, two tireless agents of Chicago's dance music culture.
