BREAKSPOLL 2008
“The Breakbeat Awards Ceremony”
Kicking off in 2001, Breakspoll first started out as a small, online voting community to value and reward the handful of breakbeat artists who were pushing the genre into the 21st century. Amazed at the response from fans across the world, when someone suggested they “should have a party to announce the results,” it made perfect sense. After all, what is breakbeat about if not hitting the dancefloor?
For the second Breakspoll, the crew pitched up at North London’s Electrowerks, and an annual frenzied marathon mash up began, all in the name of breaks of course. The Egg was the choice of venue for 2003, but when Breakspoll moved to Fabric for its fourth event, it was obvious Breakspoll had found its Mecca. The combination of dozens of breakbeat DJs, untold fanboys and Duracell bunny chicks raving it up in their droves, and Fabric’s cavernous interior was a match made in heaven, and history was written in wax – breaks as a genre was obviously here to stay.
Breakspoll has remained at Fabric ever since and this, its eighth event, will prove to be monstrous indeed. Anyone who’s anyone in the world of breakbeat will be in the building, and if not, they’ll have their membership card revoked! With numerous live PAs from the cream of the scene, including Atomic Hooligan, the Dub Pistols, Deekline & Wizard, Slyde and Rennie Pilgrem, the decks will be manned by a slew of well-known DJs including A Skillz, Krafty Kutz, Meat Katie, Lee Coombs, Breakfastaz and the Dreadzone Soundsystem amongst numerous others. There will also be an International room featuring many names from across the European scene. All this across three rooms, all night, to be followed the next day with an almighty after-party down the road at Herbal – this is what you’d call a breakbeat fan’s wet dream.
