Silent Servant (Sandwell District, Hospital Records, USA)
For a while he was anonymous, but with music as resolutely forceful and gripping as Juan Mendez's it was could only ever be a fleeting position. Perhaps out of all the artists on the now defunct but legendary Sandwell District roster, Silent Servant's music is the most visual and visceral, evoking the tension, uncertainty, and the sweaty grit of a dangerous dimly lit 1980's Los Angeles alley, knowing that at the other end, around the corner, there is a place of some kind of uncertain wonder, of lust, amazing dreams and dystopia...what?
Fusing modern techno, modern production with a firm footing in the 1980s, the post punk movement, the nihilism of The Velvet Underground, and the experimentalism of Caberet Voltaire, Silent Servant's sound has been critical in the techno scene for the last half decade, and has taken him worldwide from the stomping grounds of Berghain to the hallowed dancefloor of Japan's Labyrinth festival, and everything in between. His 2012 LP, Negative Fascination has won over critics and dancefloors alike with its atmospheres and sheer determined drive. His DJ sets, sometimes described as mutant music, will be a proverbial kick in the head to those brave enough to venture out on the night before Good Friday.
Hold our hands, trust us, it will be alright.
Asger Jorn (LIVE)
Asger Jorn is a project of composer and DJ Josh Leenaars. With a creative method based on spontaneity and experimentation, he forms unique and delicate structures based upon ambient textures and thick analogue grooves. Asger Jorn's fine attention to aesthetic detail is evident in both selection and construction of works, works that sound like they've emerged from a foggy, moss filled forest, or out of a lake whose final depths are yet to be explored. Hypnotic sounds, repetition and cavernous bass are at the forefront of this project, one that can be described purely as techno in its truest form, the sound of unique and undefined potential.
Those that danced to James at our last party are likely to have no doubt in their mind why he's been asked to play for us again. Rarely does Sydney see a full dancefloor before midnight, but there was quite literally no-one seated during James' set. A perfect fusion of bass, machine funk, and groove, analogue at heart with a futuristic outlook, James is quite possibly Sydney next underground hero. Is this write-up a bit too endearing and full of praise, well, maybe you tell us after he's finished. Finished you.
Methodix Mainline mainstay of Sydney techno for over ten years. Spinning Sandwell District records before you learnt how to spell it. Responsible for some of Sydney's most epic parties either as a promoter, or because he was booked to play and was better than the international. Proficient on three turntables, and able to use said devices to full effect, he's known for his hard as nails sound, destroying all before and after. But maybe there's a softer side that you don't know about? Come and find out as he opens the night playing a set of lovesongs and dedications.
