PENDLE COVEN (Modern Love)
Pendle Coven is a collective project overseen by Miles Whittaker and Gary Howell. Originally started in the early 90's after being brought together by the sounds of Autechre and Aphex Twin, the project is dedicated to producing quality underground music of all genres through experimentation and collaboration. The original building blocks for the Coven sound were made combining the vinyl obsession of Miles with the musicianship of Gary. Old samples and older instruments are used to convey a contemporary approach to modern electronic music. With a strong resolution, Pendle Coven have remained under the radar of mainstream electronic music by scattering their releases and having strict quality control exercised by the Modern Love label owner and 'brother in arms' Shlom Sviri. Pendle Coven will be joining us for a special live set that will mark their first visit to our fair city, fusing analogue and digital equipment to mess with your mind and jack your body.
MLZ (Modern Love)
Miles Whittaker is one half of Pendle Coven but handles his solo productions under the MLZ moniker. His Detroit inspired and vintage Warp tinged productions have established the label's reputation for deep, sparse, emotional output and played a pivotal role in Manchester's recent renaissance as a hotbed of cutting edge underground club music. Whether flying solo or as part of Pendle Coven, MLZ is a purveyor of fine funk and hypnotic grooves, laying down fierce squashed basslines with layered slabs of percolating dub chords on top of crisp, future-retro rhythms, fusing influences from Sheffield, Chicago, Detroit and Berlin. As Modern Love's in-house DJ, MLZ's skills have become renowned on the underground club circuit of Manchester and beyond. Anyone who has witnessed him DJ will tell you that he's quite simply a one-off, blending a wide range of styles into the deepest kind of dancefloor devastation imaginable! One of his legendary DJ sets at Sonar was described by Wire magazine as the unexpected highlight of the entire festival and every time he plays out he employs his incredible box of delights in unexpected ways, mixing classic cuts with upfront white labels in maverick fashion. There can be little doubt that MLZ's deep love and thirst for music from all ends of the spectrum seems to be bringing to life something quite special indeed.
APPLEBLIM (Skull Disco / Apple Pips / Tempa)
We're extremely proud to be able to host dubstep don Appleblim as a last minute replacement for Philip Sherburne (he'll be back in the country for us soon, so hold tight for that). As the joint owner of the lauded Skull Disco imprint, and more recently his own Apple Pips label, he's one of the producers that is currently flying the flag for innovation in modern electronic music. Fusing eastern tribalism with disorientatingly dark post-Basic Channel sounds, he likes to keep things deep and dark but simultanously rushy and propulsive. Anyone who's caught him DJing before will be aware of his ability to move a crowd, something that many more people will become aware of due to his upcoming mix for Tempa's 'Dubstep Allstars' series.
PATCHWERK MAN (Gutterbreakz)
Like a phoenix from the flames, we welcome the return of the mighty Patchwerk Man! After popping his head onto the scene back in '96 with appearances on a couple of 12"s for the long defunct World Music label and a cassette compilation by Antenna, he went back underground... until now! This is his first live appearance in over ten years, so make sure you get down early to witness the man's dubbed out narco-techno that he's been creating for all this time.
