IN FLAGRANTI (Codek/New York)

In Flagranti is the duo of Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor. They both have been in and around various scenes on opposite sides of the globe between New York and Europe. What they share is the simultaneous discovery of the italian cosmic scene from the late 70’s early 80’s. Both were hooked after hearing some of the mixed tapes in the early 80’s, which had this hypnotic blend of electro-disco-afro-rock-funk-dub. in the search of like minded people and the music they loved, Sasha and Alex meet in Basel/Switzerland. It didn’t take long for Sasha to join Alex who moved to new york in the early 80’s, and also make the move to the big apple, in 1993. the musical bond had become so strong that they decide to start their own record label “Codek Records”, which will mark the 10th anniversary in 2006.

Since the beginning of Codek Records, Alex and Sasha aim to explore the cosmic background in every possible way by creating and putting together different elements of art/graphic design and styles of music in to a seamless flow, which ultimately leeds them to create “In Flagranti”, an act that would reflect all that, and continue to explore the endless possibilities of a ‘cut and paste’ esthetic. Their DIY attitude, which came in many forms like “Organic Grooves” Sasha’s long running weekly party and “SMYLONYLON” tapes, Alex’s and Chris Bricks by now legendary mix tapes, gained them a lot of street credibility in New York and abroad. In addition the CODEK sleeve design is a big part of the whole esthetics, especially some of the early hand silk screened sleeves, which the Wire magazine calls “the best in the business”. In Flagranti pushes the envelope further by adding video clips that accompanies each song which are displayed on their website www.codek.com and shows the visual influence. Woman-Glamour-Trash-Chic is the identity which brings out the new punk attitude.

Whilst restricted distribution in the past and limited pressings has meant that previous releases have slipped somewhat under the radar, a buzz has been steadily building as many known djs (ivan smagghe, trevor jackson, cloe, steve kotey…) are playing the records and the name appears on many playlists and compilations world wide. Described by xlr8r magazine as “rare grooves from another planet”, the critics have been favorable. Time Out NY voted ‘In Flagranti’ as one of the best in 2005.

PADDED CELL (DC Recordings)

Richard Sen and Neil Higgins are not normal people. Having won notoriety as a Bronx Dog (Heavenly) and a Dirty Beatnik (Wall of Sound) respectively, Padded Cell came about in 2003, partly as a response to the conservatism of early millennium dance music but also to act as a conduit through which they could conduct and realize their most outlandish ideas.

Originally let loose in order to remix Big Two Hundred’s ‘Let it Bleed’, their first full scale release came in the Autumn of 2005 with Signal Failure, a prowling slab of sub aqua freak funk that reached like an ESP projection from within the Cell to the darkest corners of the dance floor. It is their intent to fashion a sound that is soulful and emotional, yet also dark and narcotic; something that can be understood simultaneously by the head and the heart, getting under the skin in different ways. Rather than seeking to fit into a pre-existing niche, its about creating an idiosyncratic sound that is peculiar to their respective personalities and reflective of their combined experience.

A shared history as club deejays and producers means that even the most mind bending elements of their sound are conducted through dance floor focused channels; disco breaks and rolling percussion combining with menacing synth work outs, electro sensibilities and live instrumentation to create an unholy brew that has been described variously as ‘dark-disco’, ‘goth-disco-rock’, and perhaps most tellingly of all, ‘devils-disco’.

The Padded Cell inhabit a hinterland between many worlds and it is there that they conduct their alchemical experiments, the experiments that draw the listener into shadows with whispers and opaque promises; follow your ears and You’ll find yourself trapped within.

NEIL THORTON & JONNY HILLER (Lasermagnetic)

Lasermagnetic was born out of passion for disco music. When promoters/DJs Neil Thornton (Madmans Discotheque, Human Zoo) and Johnny Hiller (Switch London/Tokyo, Extraordinary Dancing Bazaar resident) met at a party, they instinctively decided after one or two drinks that it was about time to put on a night (or shall we say an all-dayer) featuring the best the broad spectrum of disco-music has to offer. The diversity of the style of music actually spans over 30 years and many connections have been forged with fellow lovers of the sound around the world. From Belgium, Holland, Finland, Norway, Germany, France to Japan and the States. No wonder that many of their guests of past, present and future come from further a field. (Turku, Helsinki, Tokyo, Rome, Rotterdam, The Hague, Bergen, Oslo, Paris, Ghent, Duesseldorf and Berlin)

It is fair to say that the Lasermagnetic approach has had a great success with their punters and press alike. Their parties attract a colourful and continental/European music loving crowd who look for a real alternative. Regulars have commented that the energy of the party is more about putting a smile on peoples faces. As such we cant wait to have Neil and Jonny bring their Lasermagnetic party to Always Fridays.

MATHIAS SCHAFFHAUSER (GERMANY)

Mathias Schaffhäuser has been around in the techno and house scene since 1994 and has released tracks on WIR Recordings, Lebensfreude, Neopren, Definitive Records (house sub-label of Plus-8), Blaou Sounds, Force Inc., Multicolor, Frisbee Tracks and more. In 1997 he started his own record label WARE which released 76 twelve inches until now.

Schaffhäuser’s motto at the turntables is: Purism sucks! The quality of the music is what’s important, not sheer functionality and a perfect mix. That is: at times his sets can be rather varied from Ware-style music to thumping techno. His current favourites still come from labels such as Cargo Edition, Cadenza, Mobilee, Vakant, Circus Company - just to name a few.

PADDY FREEFORM (Universal Vibes)

Paddy Freeform is an eclectic DJ who started Universal Vibes - a project which began life as an online radio show and has developed into a record label and events company.

The ethos was to provide a platform for some genres which were underrepresented. Universal Vibes throw lovely, creative parties around the UK, with Paddy Freeform at the helm, playing his 'future soul music for the dancefloor'.
