Underground by its very nature, Cocoon has almost accidentally become one of the biggest clubbing brands in the world. Head honcho Sven Väth’s desire to do things differently and defy the mainstream – as epitomised by his world-leading Cocoon venue in Frankfurt and the forward-thinking policy of his Cocoon record labels – has most certainly paid off.
One of the biggest and most acclaimed nights in Ibiza (at Amnesia), Väth’s infectious party attitude is evoked anytime Cocoon touches down across the world – and with a buoyant Leeds crowd in tow, the effect is made even more potent. They join forces with the acclaimed System for this special Easter party.
For their return to the debauched Mint Club in Leeds, their representatives are homeboy Tobi Neumann, and Romanian hotshot Raresh. Don’t be fooled by Neumann’s slight appearance – he’s a titan behind the decks, packing more groove than pretty much anyone you can think of in his chunky house and techno sets, while his work under the Sensitiva guise with Onur Ozer shows his love for innovative sounds and structures. From the summery grooves of his secretsundaze compilation to the intensity of his peak-time sets at Amnesia, he kills it every time.
Raresh and his fellow innovators in ar:pi:ar meanwhile have made Romania the latest beacon of underground house & techno cool – with a keen ear for rhythm and left-of-centre sounds. Another highly sought after name who Cocoon can be seriously proud of unearthing.
Essential post-Lent techno binging.
