.Lucid - Doing it for the kids
RA: What are yours plans for Circuitry in 2003 and beyond?
TD: We are going to keep doing what we do. This summer is our busiest ever by a long shot, with not only the main .lucid coming up in March, but a series of 3 satellite parties before then (with trance.lucid on January 17 and tech.lucid on February 14, both at the Dendy), as well as our fortnightly pre-club down-tempo excursion Zero Kelvin, at Cafe Lounge. We just want to keep putting on unique events for people who are into the same music and vibe as we are. After .lucid I expect we'll focus on Zero Kelvin, and work on continuing the great success we've been having with that so far.
How do you select the Charities that receive the money from Lucid parties?
We specifically focus on youth-based organisation that we feel have the same principles as us. These principles are accessibility, equality, opportunity and empowerment and our two main partners, the ReachOut! youth mental health and suicide-prevention service run by the Inspire Foundation and Vibewire Youth Services, the youth media and training organisation, fill this bill perfectly. We've also fundraised for the Creative Youth Initiative, which works with homeless youth, and Nexus - Australian Youth Foundation, a youth empowerment program. We also have a youth media focus, and are working with 2SER currently for that reason.
Who are 3 DJ's/Live Acts that you would love to headline one of your parties?
Infusion would be number 1. We've been working on these guys for a while but it hasn't quite happened. They were booked for .lucid 3 before they had to pull out. The Avalanches, obviously, and perhaps in equal third position Rhibosome from Perth and Superfluid from Brisbane which I think are great new local acts who I'd love to put on at a .lucid.
Do you think there is a shift away from mainstream club nights and a changing public perception of the local, smaller more intimate club night?
I do, but I've been saying this for a while now. I think people are looking for a more community-orientated experience a lot of the time, rather than the one-size-fits-all approach of the superclub or major festival. We've seen the recent success of many great smaller nights run by passionate, genuine people, not professional promoters, including Altitude, Movin Thru Air, Clean & Serene, Mad Racket, Sweetchilli, Funktrust, Fourplay and Strudel. We try and bridge that gap, presenting a variety of sounds and acts in a large-scale-but-still-intimate format at a reasonable price and for charity, not for profit. .lucid events always have a really special vibe about them for this reason I think, as people leave their preconceptions and attitudes at the door and come together in appreciation of the music we all love.
The 'Trust The Promoter' DJ Competition is a great chance for people to increase their exposure, win some awesome prizes and perform at a Lucid party. How did this all come about? Is it something you have always wanted to do?
Yeah it's something we've thought about for a while and this just seemed the right time to give it a go. .lucid was always meant to be about new and emerging talent playing alongside the biggest names, and this is a way of unearthing Sydney's next generation of DJs and giving at least one of them a break. We've got really good feedback on it and we're looking forward to listening to all the mixes and to the final at the Burdekin Hotel on January 30.
Putting parties on for the Sydney musical fraternity is a full time job, but its not all you do is it?
None of us do this full-time. Given that most of our major events are for charity we don't take any payment for our time spent on that, so we all have other jobs. When we began doing this we kinda decided we didn't want it to be a job, we wanted to do it because we love what we are creating, and keeping the focus on charity events is a way of ensuring that this remains the case. I work for a council in youth development and the rest of the crew have various other jobs. Circuitry is a real collective, it's just people doing what they can to create the best events possible.
Finish this sentence:
A Lucid party is like..........
the best house party you could imagine, with 1000 of your closest friends.
