Many regard you as Australia’s best, or one of Australia’s best DJs. How does that mantle sit with you?
That makes me feel really determined and I really appreciate that some people say that, but thing is I'm not really pay attention to who is the best and who is second, you know what I mean? I'm just doing what I want to do but if I hear from people that kind of nice vibe it makes me very happy.
You spend a lot of time overseas. Do you feel you have a bigger presence outside or inside Australia?
I'm getting really good response in Spain now, In November/December last year i had to fly there three times including an NYE gig and also Germany is the another place that I have gigs often, after I released records from CLR (Chris Liebing's Label) got even busier but when I'm home in Brisbane i always trying to play as many as gigs in the country and I'm enjoying playing in the country. Overseas gigs and Australian gig both are important for me and I always enjoy it.
What’s your view on the state of techno in Australia? What are the differences from city to city?
Techno is going down in the world at moment, and I think same thing is happening in this country compared to the last couple of years, Melbourne is still my favourite place and there is biggest market in the country for techno, I think Perth is the other place that from my view.. the scene is not that big like Melbourne but it's healthy and outstanding. Adelaide is the true techno city from early 90's I think because of JUICE RECORDS, I heard of them when I was DJing in Tokyo and now they still have good underground scene and some awasome DJs there. I think Sydney is always up and down it surprises me it's the biggest city in the country but the techno scene did not grow, they have a good scene for other dance music but not for techno and Brisbane is the same as Sydney, techno scene is small and it hasn't gone anywhere, just stayed same level since five or six years ago.
Let’s get controversial: at the Dance Music Awards you were beaten to the ‘Best DJ’ title by Kid Kenobi. A lot of people were outraged and have said this is further evidence that the DMAs are a farce. Your thoughts?
Actually I was pretty happy that I was nominated, I never thought I was going to be nominated for these kind of awards because what I play is really underground music style also I may not be working hard enough in Australia, I have had more gigs in overseas lately, I think. And I won't say the DMAs are a farce!
I’m sure everyone’s been asking you about Final Scratch, so apologies if this question will be repetitive! How long have you been toying with FS?
Not that long actually, I got this in December in Frankfurt and I started using it at the NYE gig in Spain, it's been working great and i think it's great to have it for travel because I don't have to take so many records overseas anymore but still I can play long sets with FS. It's using like nomal records and you can not tell the difference playing records or FS. I love it.
What is on the agenda for 2003? Productions? Mix CDs? What gigs are planned around Australia and overseas?
I want to spend more time on productions this year, I want to release as many as I can, maybe five 12"s at least and also some remix work as well. There could be a mix cd, that I haven't done for years. The exciting thing is I just have been booked for the Timewarp techno festival in Germany that will be on the 5th april, this will be great promotion for me for my future.
