Ben Korbel SixtyFours it with RA
Ben Korbel broke into the Australian scene buy winning a local DJ competition. At that stage many local DJ’s in the harbour city were in search of the quick buck and began to perform harder sets, However, Ben stayed strong, performing sets he believed in, sets he would have liked to hear had he been on the other side of the decks and for this he has earn’t the respect of his peers, media and fans alike.
A classic purveyor of progressive deep house with perfectly placed break beat, Ben’s sets have even graced the famous Kiss radio waves in England through a guest mix with friend and Sydney DJ Trent Anthony.
Short of time as he promotes Sounds On Sydney and “64”, Ben found a few spare minutes to answer a series of questions which use the number “64” for no apparent reason whatsoever. Funny, stupid and insightful in parts.
1. Describe Ben Korbel in 64 words or less?
Supercalafragalisticexpialadotious. Even though the sound of Ben is something quite atrocious. If you thank him loud enough he’ll shower you with coasters. Supercalafragalisticexpialadotious.
2. 64 nights with Kylie, Holly or J-Lo?
20 nights with each and then a 4 day finale with all three (just jokes – 64 with my girlfriend!)
3. Gas as a venue has been scrutinized over the past of year or so due to the lack of quality events that have been held there, what will 64 be doing differently to change this view?.
The elements we focus on to ensure people enjoy their night are fairly simple - music, crowd, experience. Clear sound, a safe and comfortable environment with the unique crowd that Nick Warren attracts and the even better music he plays!
4. What are some the best ‘64’ equations you have received back from the 'Get out of Gaol free' competition?
“68 beautiful women minus 4 not so beautiful women equals 64 pleasant memories. A night with Nick will do though!”
5. Is there any plans for 64 to take on national domination in the future?
Not at this stage – it is a Sydney based event.
6. As a DJ, playing alongside Nick Warren must be exciting in itself. Which other 64 DJs would you like to play alongside?
I’d love to play alongside Lee Burridge and Danny Tenaglia.
7. Some DJs concentrate on keeping the dancefloor, others prefer to take on the role of an educator. Then there are those who are more ‘the entertainer’. There are 6400 good DJs out there but only a handful of truly great ones. What do you think makes a great DJ?
Someone who is able to play exactly the music that moves them, in such a way, that the audience are able to experience a similar feeling to the DJ and become engaged in a “zone” of sorts.
8. How long until we see Korbel on the sleeves of 12” in a production or re-mix capacity? 64 days, months, years?
Realistically it will be 12 months at least, unless I sit in with an engineer, which is also a possibility.
9. Do you find people like Anthony Pappa, Infusion, Phil K etc an inspiration in terms of their success overseas, or do you just concentrate on your own thing and play it day by day?
I’m more concentrating on my own goals and motivations but have huge admiration for those guys.
10. If your stuck in a cell for 64 days, who would you most like it to be with?
MacGuyyver so that we could escape in a submarine made of a trundle bed and spoon.
11. If you were in a cell with Nick Warren, 64 rats, one deck and a small wooden cat, what would the conversation be like?
It would probably be along the lines of “rooby, rooby, sixty four, how does your garden grow”.
12. 64,000 people, NYE in L.A 2006, Ben Korbel is the headline act. Who would you like to warm up for you?
Massive Attack with full string orchestra, playing Unfinshed Symphony live.
64. If I have had 63 really good nights out in the last 4 years and I go out on Friday night to Gas, when I wake up on Saturday morning how many good nights will I have had in the last 4 years and 1 day?
