Around the track with the Go Karts

The Go Karts chat to RA about doing it live, where they get their inspiration from from and how it all comes together on the night.

What style of music do you base your sound on?
- It all comes from a breaks or a drum and bass headspace as far as the vibe goes but I'll tend to mix up as much as possible on top of that with less traditional influences that you might not associate with those genres. Like a little bit of classical piano or country.

How long have you been interested in dance music?
- Since about '96 I guess, I mean I'd heard dance music before then but it wasn't until I heard Drum and Bass that I truly thought that it was worth the effort. It just made everything else seem very un evolved and childish.

How long have you been producing music together?
- About 2-3 years but it started out as a purely live improvised experience which on a good day was great but it also had the habit of bombing too, so in the last couple of years I thought it was time construct something a bit more regimented, get a bit of form happening.

How did you first get into producing dance music?
- I really just wanted to produce live what I was hearing on records but the more I studied it the more I wanted to learn how to do it for myself on my own computer, shit did I open up a can of worms!

How did you come up with the name 'The Go Karts'?
- To be honest I just liked the way it looked when it was spelt well when it's spelt with a “K" it does. But also it's nice to have a name that doesn't scream out that I'm an electronic act, something a bit different I guess.

What was the last CD you bought for your own listening pleasure?
- Andy C Ramm Raiders. It's a great compilation, I don't think there’s one track I ever skip over, try saying that about most comps.

Where do you draw your inspiration?
- It sounds a bit wanky but I get inspired by other creative people especially those who seem to be able to turn ideas into actions with little or no self consciousness. That's a gift an one I would love to have. Also a great movie can send you home feeling particularly inspired.

What would be the ultimate line-up for an event where you were also playing at?
- John Lennon, Goldie (circa 96) Dave Tipper and Aphex Twinn, and lots of snacks.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists wanting to get their work listened to?
- Probably a good start is to decide what it is you do, is it house, breaks what ever, and then aim at the clubs or shops that play that music, It helps if your shit is undeniably good too, but really it's very important just to let these people know you exist and that you are enthusiastic about what you do.

What city in the world would you most like to play in and why?
- I haven't been to Japan yet, but it would be a thrill to play your music anywhere really. But I'll take Japan. It’s a food thing!

Where have you been playing prior to now?
- The beach road hotel in Bondi have always been forthcoming with gigs which was great when we were getting started. Fridgid, Luke and the crew are tireless about promoting electronic music they will have a cool spot when they get to hell tee he.

What does Transmission mean to you?
- It's an awesome opportunity to be part of such a huge event. these things don't come along every day so to get asked to do it is a real thrill.

What can we expect from your upcoming set at Transmission 'Live'?
- The purpose of the Go-Karts is to play live so, you will be entertained in one form or another if not by the music but by the likely hood of me doing some pretty crap dancing.
