DeepChild, original member of Clan Analogue, 2SER DJ and Sydney's foremost purveyor of electronic dub music, has recently taken up a very un-dublike musical instrument: the electric guitar.

Aside from hoping to offer some licks to the upcoming Pnau "punk" record, DC has taken up the instrument for another project: a live-funk-jazz electro trio tentatively called 'The Mothership'. Also featuring Entropic bassist Ollie Smith on upright and jazz pianist Barney Wakefield on Fender Rhodes, this improvised jam session will probably never record an album, or even gig very much (they've played once at Glebe Markets so far), but it does offer Deep Child the opportunity to indulge in the sort of live interaction his DJ sets or solo gigs can't offer.

"I'm beginning to really enjoy the interaction of live collaboration" remarks the dreaded Deep, sipping a Glebe coffee on a sullen Sunday morning, talking often of his appreciation for the live improvisation of his contemporaries.

Otherwise known as Rick Bull, Deep Child's live act has recently become more collaborative, often guesting on stage with other bands (like Entropic), adding in sampled elements alongside live instrumentation. Or, as was the case when The Bird walked on in Womadelaide, having their live drums merge with his own percussive loops.

Meanwhile, Rick has slowly begun working on his third album, the follow up to last year's successful Chocolate Dubs which spawned a Triple J high rotation spot and a Ministry of Sound-licensed cut (for Refugee Dubs)

"I'm attempting to use vocal elements, like little snippets of hip hop vocals, as textures rather than narrative devices, but still have a couple of vocal tracks on there." Looking for a more jazz sound, Rick continues playing his own bass lines, "looking to offset artificial elements with a warm sound".

As for the electric guitars? Keep an ear out for in on the next Pnau record.
