Dark Nebula/Luna Orbit at Clairvoyance

Luna Orbit admits he will be holding back a little when he steps up behind the decks to headline Clairvoyance, at the City Hotel this Saturday night.

Luna Orbit is one of Australia's most prolific psychedelic trance DJs and producers. Based in Byron Bay, he DJs regularly at forest parties around the northern NSW area, as well as indoor and outdoor events in Japan and as far away as Portugal, where he played recently alongside Logic Bomb, Shift and Audiolize. As a producer, he operates under the name Dark Nebula and has been responsible for two albums on Digital Psionics - of which he is co-creator and manager - and releases on otherlabels in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Portugal.

This Saturday he swaps the trees and stars of the bush, however, for a Dark Nebula set in the confines of the urban jungle of inner-city Sydney and says: "I try to hold back a little indoors. Big sounding tracks are hard to fully comprehend indoors. "If I am playing as Dark Nebula then the music is going to be full throttle. But I always watch the dance floor carefully to decide my trance direction."

Luna Orbit discovered trance in 1993 and has been producing music since 1999. He says it's the "relaxed atmosphere and more alternative culture" of Byron Bay that makes the place a hotbed of the psychedelictrance scene. But he adds the genre is enjoying a boom period around the nation and that promoters would do well to focus on the local product. "Australia is rocking," he says. "Promoters need to support their own artists more and stop spending all their money on overseas acts. We have some great talent here, which labels such as Digital Psionics and Tribeadelic are trying their best to expose.

"The more we support our own acts, the more Australian music will improve."Clairvoyance offers a blend of psychedelic trance in one room and techno in the other.

Joining Dark Nebula/Luna Orbit is Benza from Melbourne and Sydney locals Psyber, Galaktik and Shangri-la. In the techno room are Biz-E, Reiki Aura, Vic v. Et-Chan, Darkchild v. Mark Murphy, Luke Harland and a live set from HPS?, who is about to release a new CD from recent gigs.

Clairvoyance is being put on by T-Quest, responsible for previous events such as MindStream, the Solid CD launch (with Tribeadelic and Webgrrl), Lost City, Audiogasm, Frequencies From Beyond and Focus.

Of their decision to mix psychedelic trance with techno, organiser Raffi says: "We like to play and present the best of underground music, music that not only has a great depth but also raw emotions. Skin deep and beautiful, inspiring, soul-elevating, deep and meaningful music and yet full of fun and
spiritual awareness.

"We strongly believe techno and trance can take us there - a faraway place where heart and mind become the same ... full of love."And so what planet will Luna Orbit's listeners be transported to? The man promises his set will be "dark, grindy, gritty sounds, hard bass and fast-paced. The new Neo Generation of psychedelic dance sounds."

Standby for liftoff.
