DMA 2003 - Best DJ Nominees

AUSTRALIAN DANCE MUSIC AWARDS

NIDA

With the Australian Dance Music Awards approaching quickly, RA thought it would be a great time to pin down the "Best National DJ" nominees and ascertain there impressions of the awards as a whole, the sense of pride in being nominated and their memories from previous DMA's. The results are as below:

Kid KenobiKid Kenobi
In your view, what have the DMAs achieved over the past few years?
I think it has created a sense of pride in what we do.

How does it feel to be nominated for an award, and how important to you is winning, or at the very least being nominated?
I think it’s an incredible honour.

Do you think winning an award would entail any specific expectations from you in the future?
Yeah, I think it does because it colours the way people perceive you … I think that can be both a positive and a negative.

What is your favourite DMAs memory?
Trying to get into the RSL on George Street after the 2001 DMAs 'for one more drink'.

How do you hope to see the Motorola DMAs develop in the future?
I think they'll have to grow as the culture grows. Who knows if 'dance music' will be around in ten or fifteen years time? In the meantime I hope people embrace the awards as a way of celebrating [our] dance culture.

In your view, what have the DMAs achieved over the past few years?
The DMA's give industry and public recognition to our leading local talent, and through this many new acts have been able to represent Australia overseas in their chosen field.

How does it feel to be nominated for an award, and how important to you is winning, or at the very least being nominated?
It's an absolute honour to be nominated alongside the likes of Phil K, Kid Kenobi, GT and John Course. They're all fantastic DJ's in their own right, and some have been doing it many years longer than I have! If I win the award it really will be a total surprise.

Do you think winning an award would entail any specific expectations from you in the future?
Probably just to keep giving it my best shot at every opportunity.

What is your favourite DMAs memory?
Watching Infusion burst onto stage dressed in starched shirts with painted-on ties, performing at the 2001 DMA's.

How do you hope to see the Motorola DMAs develop in the future?
This year's event looks stronger than ever before, so by gaining even more public awareness of the event, we'll hopefully have a specialist awards ceremony for dance music that rivals the size of the ARIA's in the coming years.

GTGT
In your view, what have the DMAs achieved over the past few years?
The DMA's are a great way of promoting our industry to the public. I also think that as a result, the dance scene has really been helped in achieving a kind of "legitimacy" within the general music media.

How does it feel to be nominated for an award, and how important to you is winning, or at the very least being nominated?
It’s great to be nominated for anything -but then to win something on top of that - especially when it’s a public vote is amazing. But I think that no matter who wins, everyone comes out trumps as the award ceremony itself is such a great night, and it’s awesome to catch up with everyone at once!

What criteria do you think the industry and public take into consideration when voting for the awards?
I would like to think that talent, passion and commitment would account for at least a few votes, but I think it all comes down to the best haircut in the end.

Do you think winning an award would entail any specific expectations from you in the future?
I think winning inspires you to keep up the great work, as does a nomination
really - as it what got you the nod in the first place.

What your favourite DMAs memory?
The fact that I can’t remember is a memory enough, it’s like the quote about the 60's -"if you can remember it, you weren’t really there!"

How do you hope to see the Motorola DMAs develop in the future?
The complimentary drinks really need to last longer in my humble opinion.

John Course

In your view, what have the DMAs achieved over the past few years?
I think the DMA's have helped gain a great deal of exposure for many of the more underground acts in the dance music scene by encouraging media attention to the event. They have also brought the entire industry to one spot and given new acts and DJs the chance to meet with and talk with established acts and DJs.

How does it feel to be nominated for an award, and how important to you is winning, or at the very least being nominated?
Vicious has been nominated before but this year I have gained a nomination in the National DJ category which is great. I have been involved in this scene since I started DJing 15 years ago and just about everything I have done in my professional life has in one way or another been associated with it. For me personally dance music and DJing is very close to my heart so winning would be fantastic, but being nominated is also great.

What criteria do you think the industry and public take into
consideration when voting for the awards?

It depends on the award, but in the people's choice areas it really comes back to popularity and therefore how widely known you are. I think the industry is more inclined to look at nominees and what they have achieved regardless of how popular they are.

Do you think winning an award would entail any specific expectations from you in the future?
I think that winning the national DJ award would raise some people’s expectations if they are yet to see me play. Our label and some of our artists have won before so I think people already find it conceivable that we could win in these areas again. It does show a consistent commitment to the various genres of dance music over time if we win the label award again.

What your favourite DMAs memory?
Unfortunately when we won best dance label I was overseas, but outside of the actual awards I vaguely remember some pretty funny after parties and some mad times!

How do you hope to see the Motorola DMAs develop in the future?
I think they are well and truly on the right track. I think to really embrace the Melbourne public they need to be held down here maybe once every three years.
