Hed Kandi - a global ear and eye experience
Hed Kandi, is now a global brand in the music industry with superb appeal at both an event and CD level. Founder and globe trotting DJ Mark Doyle who will soon be in Australia flying the Hed Kandi flag at a number of events throughout our land.
RA spoke to Mark, whilst he begins to pack his bags of vinyls and he gave us a great insight into Hed Kandi’s past, present and future.
What aspects of Hed Kandi do you believe creates such a global appeal?
Good Music Great Presentation and a true love of what we are doing . Music corsses all boundaries and borders and we seem to have come up with a formula that works globally.
What is your perception of the "scene" in Australia at the moment?
I don't really have one ... I know our Cd's sell well so you've all got extremely good taste in music ! From my brief visit a year ago I was pleasantly surprised at the crowds that attended a club nights ... great looking people, with a genuine love for the music and really out for a good time .
Did you set up sister labels "Stero Sushi" and "Acid Lounge" so you had an outlet to releases music that you felt was good, but didn't fit into the "Hed Kandi" mould?
Exactly ! Stereo Sushi was really an answer to the amount of amazing Deep Soulful House that dropped through the letterbox every week and Acid Lounge was one of the crazy ideas you have at 5am in the morning ...
As a "Global Brand", how do u feel Hed Kandi will cope with the recent backlash towards the big clubbing corporation?
I think we are very different in that we are a label primarily and our live events are a chance for our audience to come and hear the music. We don't use any big name DJ's and the music is tailored to fit the venue and audience. We're also not interested in educating people in a particular music style ...Hed Kandi is about the people the party the atmosphere. We're probably the next generation of global brand... one that is about the audience and what we can give them rather than what we can extract from them financially ... The parties are more of a thank you for buying the CD's !
It's a strange name, care to enlighten us as to its origins?
Hed Kandi - Ear Candy - Something that sounds great, eye kandi – something that looks great... where are those senses located... In your Head ! Thus Hed Kandi !!!
In only 4 years, you have achieved a huge amount of success including a Dance Star award in 2001, what does the next four years hold and where do you hope Hed Kandi is positioned in the mind of dance music enthusiasts?
I hope we can keep doing what we do at the level we are doing it... the main concern is not to grow so large that we have to compromise the brand to make enough money to feed a staff of 500 ..I can't see that happening at the moment as there are only 6 of us. We want to develop artist projects and get the Hed Kandi radio show onto more overseas radio stations . Most of all
I want to carry on enjoying what I'm doing ..this whole venture is 24 hours a day 7 days a week and the moment it becomes about something other than the music and having a good time is the moment I stop.
What can we expect from your Australian tour?
One very strung out exhausted DJ running from one venue to another playing loads of superb music and trying to whip up a bit of Kandi atmosphere downunder. We're lucky to be working with some great venues and some great DJ's ... so look out for superb music, lotsa Kandi visuals and decor and best of all a great atmosphere ...the last one of course is purely down to all your readers getting themselves dwon to the venues and partying in true kandi style !
