Tim Deluxe - Crossing over to great success
Tim Deluxe, is rapidly become a huge household name in the world of dance music as his productions like ‘It Just Won’t Do’ and ‘Less Talk More Action’ find support in both main stream circles and in clubs throughout the world. He is soon to tour Australian and RA had a quick chat with the man who has worked with stars like Kylie Minogue about his studio work, plans for the coming 12months and the life of an Ibiza resident.
Firstly, you began working in a record store at age 14, when most kids in London are more concerned with trying to become the next Ian Wright in their back yard, why were you drawn to music from such a young age?
I did want to do the football thing but soon realised that I wasn't good enough so music was my next big hobby and that then got all my attention.
Of all your hit records which have gathered huge support from commercial radio stations around the world, are there any that you thought wouldn¹t make it is as far, or did you have a feeling that hits such as ‘It Just Won’t Do’ and ‘Less Talk More Action’ had a an abundance of cross appeal and were destined for commercial success?
Yes, but HOW Big I wasn't sure. You know in the studio if it's working or not and with those tracks it definitely felt good making them.
Your production history shows that you have the unique ability to produce records for a multitude of genres, what can we expect from Tim Deluxe over the next 12 months and are you itching to produce a certain genre of music?
I doing a project with the Bugsta at the minute which is a Rock/hip-Hop project. I'm really having fun on that one so it's nice to open up and do some other vibes.
You have had a residency over the last two years in Ibiza, is it as popular as ever or do you see it taking on a less important role as DJ’s jet set across the globe so often now? What is the best thing about Ibiza in the summer?
The vibe in Ibiza is special because everyone gets excited to be there and it has some amazing clubs. It was a little bit quieter in general this year than times before. I think the prices need to come down as it's way too expensive for punters(take note greedy club owners)
The dates for the Miami Winter Music Conference have just been released, will you be going and if so what do you hope to achieve from spending a week surrounding by fellow DJ¹s, producers and other industry professionals?
Not sure at the minute.
What is your current perception of the Australian scene? After your work with Kylie, I hope you don¹t think we all have as cute backside as her?
Ha Ha. I've heard good reports about Australia so I'll see what it's really about when I get there. I don't like to pre judge things too much as sometimes you can be disappointed or be given the wrong vibe about a place.
Do you think the Tim Deluxe sound is more suited to a club or a large festival?
Both depending on the crowd.
Who would you most like to work with in the studio and who you most like to perform a ‘back 2 back’ set with?
No one in particular.
Vocals are in a key element in your music, are there any vocalist that you would really like to work with, that you haven¹t had the opportunity as yet?
Chris Martin-Coldplay
Some DJs concentrate on keeping the dancefloor, others prefer to take on the role of an educator. Then there are those who are more ‘the entertainer’. There are hundreds or thousands of good DJs out there but only a handful of truly great ones. What do you think makes a great DJ?
I myself go on reaction, so the bigger the reaction the better the Dj. Energy is so important.
