What’s on the menu at the Sunday Social?
What’s on the menu at the Sunday Social?

For this recipe you will need:
- A theatre built in 1930
- To spend 12 million dollars on a refit;
- A state of the art nightclub
- One sundrenched courtyard and a funky bar.
- At least 3 headline DJ’s (add more if required)
- A door charge of $12

Instructions: make your way to the Roxy in Parramatta on the 13th of June – this will take between 5 minutes and an hour, depending where you live.

45 minutes down the M4 and we arrived at Parramatta’s latest addition - The Roxy, to find out a little more about the new Sunday event starting next week and to have a quick chat with Sunday Social’s special ingredients: Kid Kenobi, The Jackal, Learned Hand, Mark Walton & Phats.

the stunning entryThe press release tells no lies – it is a beautiful and unique venue. I am impressed; The Roxy certainly seems to have achieved its mission to bring a more credible, higher standard of clubbing into the western suburbs. My gaggle of DJ’s are settling back in the Atrium bar - which truly gives the interior of most of the bars in the CBD a run for their money , the photo call is over and it’s time to get on with the serious job of interviewing...

So, are you bringing any R&B with you on Sunday? (Sorry I couldn’t resist that). Kid Kenobi: "RNB? Are we playing RNB?", Jackal: "Don't you have any?" as a chuckle breaks out from the gaggle, Kid Kenobi: "er, yeah sure" "yep, of course" "20 of Rugbys greatest hits" again from the Jackal... "if you ain't got RNB, youse is not comin' in" drops in Mark Walton. In all seriousness the music policy is expected to be a blend of funky house with Breaks in the Atrium bar.

lounging insideMeanwhile, my gaggle are fast disappearing as they catch sight of the nightclub areas and rush off to have a squiz at the set up... "that was easy, catch sight of another room and their gone” which gives me a little more time to talk to Phats and Mark Walton about Good Budha and their time in the studio: “ It’s been great taking a break from playing and get into the studio”, “We’ve got a new EP coming out – Hydra Funk, Fretless” Mark Walton: “and have just finished a tour with Good Budha” “plus we’re supporting people under the stairs” doesn’t sound like much of a break Phats “Good Budha are playing Global Festival in Byron too”., “yes and then there’s my home fitness DVD coming out” “I’m doing a Pilates DVD” offers Mark...

The gaggle return form the club and it’s back to the group: “Good equipment?” asks the Jackal “yeah, nice set up – 2 CDJ 1000's and a decent mixer” from Kid Kenobi, “Hey, how did your radio mix turn out?” Kid Kenobi: “I don’t know, I did and left!”. Jackal: “it’s a good station for Breaks in the UK, its big there”.

LH: “So what’s the topic of conversation?”
JKL: “Parramatta and what it means to you”
KK: “is not!”
JKL: “could be if you wanted it to be...”
MW: “It’s the first place that Micheal Jackson played in Australia”
JKL: “Carols by candle light...”
KK: “How will they know who said what?” (I’m taping the interview..)
JKL: “...voice recognition” “I am the Jackal”
KK: “No! I am the Jackal”
MW: “No, It’s me – I am the Jackal!!!”

testing out the overhead supporting beamsSo as the conversation deteriorates into voice recognition and general piss taking I’m going to leave the special ingredients of the Sunday Social to enjoy a beer in the flash Atrium bar. It remains to be seen if the drive to Parramatta is positive or negative for Sunday Social but the venue is fantastic, a line up that includes Kid Kenobi, The Jackal, Learned Hand, Mark Walton, Phats, Alex Taylor and Mark Dynamix is certainly not to be sniffed at and $12 entry certainly takes the pain away from a journey to Parramatta.
