2005 Sonar Prologues with Basteroid

Basteroid, or Sebastian Riedl when he is at home, is co-partner of the (relatively) new label in Cologne, Areal Records. The Austrian, having made the requisite pilgrimage to Germany, is acclaimed for his commanding, quirky and experimental live performances. His production work laiden with all manners of squelches, rasping bass lines and bleeps has been equally successful. His 2003 release, Against Luftwiderstand, winning favour with the Kompakt crowd.
As far as I can see you are a Sonar virgin what are you expecting from this year's festival?
First of all, I am looking forward to see a lot more of my German friends, more than at any other event (even the German ones)! It will be also great to celebrate with almost the whole Areal crew because normally we are all celebrating at the same time, but in totally different corners of the planet!
Did the international success of the single Against Luftwiderstand in 2003 bring any discoveries of how the electronic music scene differs in other countries?
It’s true, at that time I did not know a lot about International Insanity (that’s what I call it) at all. But this track did not change my life in the way you might expect – it was the slow but unstoppable rise of my label that did!
What is your favourite festival memory?
I was in Munich as a guest and I don’t remember the name of the festival, I caught the towel of Lenny Kravitz (it was really stinky....oh my god)! So I sold it to a screaming teeny girl for 100 DM. This is something like eight years ago - I wonder what it would have brought on eBay?
"I just change some kicks from 'bip' to 'boom'!"
How do you change your style when playing to festivals rather than nightclubs?
I just change some kicks from "bip" to "boom"!
The Sonar programme includes features on art, multimedia and technology. How do you think advances in these areas affect the music industry and the music you play?
Hmmm, if my music comes from the heart, I don’t think it can be influenced by technological things but art affects, in my opinion, any part of life. I am very interested in more "old skool" art styles like modern paintings or sculptures.
Sonar has a reputation for pushing new frontiers. What are you looking forward to catching at this year's festival?
I will be very glad if I can see some of my friends. Other than that, I am willing to get lost in the entire programme and I hope to see or hear something impressive that I don’t know of yet.
How will you be spending your time in Barcelona when not playing?
Chill. Parks. Bongos ..... yes lots of bongos!!!
Finally, will you be launching any new music at Sonar this year? Can you give RA a heads-up on anything to keep an ear out for, or anything else on the horizon for you or Areal in 2005?
I did a record for Sender-Records which should be released about the time, the festival starts. There is also a more housey one coming up on Festplatten by the end of the year..... and of course I am working on new Areal releases!
You should definitely watch out for the Metope album "Kobol" which is to be released in September.
Basteroid plays Sonar by Night on Friday 17 June.
