SF Love with Lee Burridge

Lee Burridge

Lee Burridge is the loveable Englishman that has grown into our hearts, minds and ears and given us a definitive reason to go out to Clubland each weekend. Always the funny man either in or out of the spotlight, his personality is intoxicating. A source of laughter and admiration for many of his fans, you could almost forget he is also one of the most proficient DJs on the circuit today.

Currently in the midst of starting his new 365 project with a few other surprises around the corner, the Jim Carrey of dance music gave RA a bit of his time to chat about sex, mayhem and the upcoming Love Parade in San Francisco.

"I heard how amazing it was last year and so obviously I am completely overly excited at the prospect of getting to play this year’s... if ever there was a city where a Love Parade should be held, it’s San Francisco!"

- Lee Burridge on Love Parade San Francisco 2005

What float will you be playing on?

I'll be on the ANU Float presented by the ElectroCelt San Francisco guys with Desyn Masiello, Jamie Anderson, John Tejada, Scott Carrelli, Jon Beech, and Sinikus.

How excited are you to be playing in North America’s version of the Love Parade?

So excited that every time I think about it I get a pee spot in my g-string.

This year’s Love Parade in San Francisco has expanded to the entire weekend with pre-parties, post-parties, and weekend parties throughout the city in celebration of the Love Parade and the idea of Dr. Motte’s “Love, Peace, and Pancakes,”. How do you see the Love Parade different, or special compared to other dance events like South West Four, Sonar, or the Extrema Festival?

The parade is free which is a very good start! I think people go along without as many expectations as they do if they've paid a great deal of money for a ticket. It really has a fun aspect to it; I'm expecting to see a lot more sex than you see at other festivals.

Have you been to any of the different Love Parade’s around the world? Is it different? Is the mood the same?

I'm a love parade virgin.

The Love Parade and Woodstock have the same essence, same vibe; two events that bring love and peace; colorful and open-minded people together in one location, with a massive party and some of the most popular entertainers of their time. Do you see any correlations between this and Woodstock?

Woodstock was full of talented musicians and not a bunch of DJs who can't play a triangle. I think the bottom line is people having a good time, and enjoying and spending that time with other people. Just make sure you learn your lesson from history and stay off the brown acid.

Do you believe dance music, or dance culture is just a fad like what most people in the general music business believe?

If it is then it’s been a fad for a lot longer than fads are supposed to be around. The general music business just sees how much, or rather, how little dance music makes compared to Hip Hop for example. I think people will always want to go out and dance; we just have to make sure we keep it interesting for them so I hope those DJs who play the same old music every day, every week, and every year either retire or go down the record shop and buy some of the amazing music that’s sitting there waiting to be played.

Do you think the parade will open or has opened the eyes of those that haven’t paid attention to dance culture? Do you think this event will eventually revitalize the presence of dance music in mainstream culture in America?

Does America need revitalizing? I play at some super dope clubs to clued-up people. The Love Parade is great, and hopefully will be an amazing day, and even if it brings one new person into its circle then we are moving in the right direction.

Do you have any time off to explore and enjoy San Francisco during the weekend or will the parties and the parade itself consume your life? What’s your opinion about San Francisco in general?

I can't wait to live in SF. I'm hoping to take my 365 project there in 2006. It's an amazingly unique place and the vibe rules! I will be spending most of my time during the Love Parade weekend in dark sweaty clubs though.

Finally, can you give RA a heads-up on anything to keep an ear out for, or anything else on the horizon for you in 2005?

A new “Everybody” mix CD with Sander [Kleinenberg] which we've both done a disc for. A track called 'Treat 'em Mean, Keep 'em Keen' and of course 365 in New York (September & October 2005) and Florence before the end of the year. Then I will be moving into the southern hemisphere in 2006. Shhh!!!
