Sonar 2006 Prologues : Modeselektor
You may have gathered Modeselektor have a sense of humour. With an album titled Hello Mom! out on BPitch Control and tracks such as 'Tetris Pack', 'Vote or Die' and 'Kill Bill Vol. 4' the German DJ and production live-act duo have their tongues firmly in cheek (or behind the monkey faces that adorn their album artwork and merchandise). In between jokes, the pair release dancefloor destroying grooves originating from any number of genres. In an era when the boundaries between genres and artists become increasingly minimal, an act like Modeselektor is particularly refreshing.
RA got down with Modeselektor in their own kinda way...
Do you have a favourite festival memory?
Hmm ... let's see ... ehm ... well ... it seems we've lost our memory ... hold on a sec, where did it go???
We will bring our slide guitars and steel drums and try to set up a Hawaiian beach atmosphere. The only problem we are facing right now is how to get the two tonnes with the sand on stage...
For many Europeans Sonar is the start of summer, does the warmer weather affect your sound at all?

For people not used to a Spanish lifestyle, a siesta is not part of their usual day. How do you approach the afternoon break?
We think that siesta has to be part of the day in any country, with no regards to the climatic zones! And, by the way, if the Spanish people would be honest, they would admit that the siesta isn't there because of the heat anymore - I mean, look at the climatic changes over the last 20 years!
Sonar is very interested in new frontiers, not just technology but art, music and social trends as well. What do you think have been some of the biggest developments of the last year?

The Sonar programme is always quite diverse and innovative. Who are you looking forward to seeing?

At the end of last year you released your album Hello Mom! a crazy mix of styles including techno, electro, broken beat and even grime presented as a radio show. What do you have planned for your set at Sonar?
We'll try to be the loudest! Nonstop stage diving!
Do you have anything planned for the rest of summer?
Many thanks. We'll release a new 12" in September on bPitchControl.
