Believe it or not, Clean and Serene has been part of Sydney’s clubbing scene for an amazing 4 years. From a very small party at the Lava Bar at the Burdekin to its new home at YU, Clean and Serene has come along way and made a huge mark in the Sydney scene and serves up some of the best “FunkyChunkySexyHouse” music in town.

To celebrate its 4th birthday Clean and Serene are hosting a birthday bash this Saturday 5th November at YU and will feature one of its founders Jackster alongside special guest DJ Alex Taylor as well as our favourite Clean and Serene resident djs.

To mark such a special occasion we caught up with Clean and Serene’s Tazman to ask him some questions.

RA: It’s hard to believe that 4 years have passed since the start of C&S. At the time you came up with the idea and started out at the Burdekin did you ever dream that it would take off as well as it has and still be going strong 4 years later?

TAZ: When we first started Clean and Serene, it was with the intention of hosting a monthly “House Party” style gathering where we could catch up with our mates, have a few drinks and spin some tunes. In all honesty, we never dreamt of the night evolving into a strong brand now 4 years old. We started C&S as a vehicle for us to host a monthly party with our friends. However, once we started getting positive feedback from them we realised we had something to offer to the wider Sydney Clubbing community.

RA: Starting out in such a competitive industry, what did you aim to achieve with Clean and Serene within Sydney’s club scene?

TAZ: I think we always wanted to remain true to our brand image, which is to provide “FunkyChunkySexyHouse” music. During the course of a night at Clean and Serene, you can expect to hear a range of styles from deep, funky, sexy, vocal and soulful house through to tribal, percussive, electro and breaks, as well as that uplifting main room sound. Punters that come to Clean and Serene have a good ear for music and can rely on the djs not just sticking to the safe bet and playing commercial floor-fillers, they also get to hear some of the freshest sounds from some of Sydney’s finest djs.
On top of all of this, we have never taken ourselves too seriously and you can always expect to hear the odd quirky tune thrown into our sets whilst occasionally donning some ridiculous costume.
Fun is the most important ingredient when hosting a night and we try to ensure everyone walks out with a big smile on their faces.

RA: Since moving to YU from the Burdekin would you say people’s expectations of your nights are higher with YU being such a popular venue for so many years and if so what have you done to keep the regulars coming back and also bring in fresh blood?

TAZ: Moving to YU has definitely shifted the profile of Clean and Serene. We came to YU after 3 ½ very successful years at The Burdekin Hotel and wanted to raise the profile of the brand to that of a Club night as opposed to remaining essentially a night in a Bar. Our regulars have been loyal followers of Clean and Serene over the last 4 years and I think it’s comes down in part to our music policy and the vibe we try to create…. that of a House Party type atmosphere. For those new to Clean and Serene, we have tried to introduce them to what it’s all about. All they need to do is have a look at the imagery (created by Morph) of snapshots taken from previous nights and you can see the fun and frivolity taking place at the night. All those involved behind the scenes at Clean and Serene believe passionately in trying to bring a fun filled evening to everyone, and this I think shines through.

RA: Are there any plans to expand and start bringing in internationals in the near future?

TAZ: Part of our move from The Burdekin to a larger venue was to expand the brand and bring other acts in. To date at YU we have had the likes of Ian Carey (NL), one of the most respected djs and producers in the House Scene with a multitude of remixes such as Rise, Feelin’ Love, Yes, Love and Happiness and Give up the Funk.
As well as Ian, we have drawn upon the finest in local djs as well with Rob Kay (Cabin Crew/Star 2 Fall), Brenden Fing, Kate Monroe and Alex Taylor all featuring at Clean and Serene.
Over the coming months you can expect to see a wide range of live, local, interstate and international acts at Clean and Serene.

RA: What other plans do you have for Clean and Serene in the future?

We have some very exciting news about to be released in the next day or so. There are some fantastic plans being laid down for Clean and Serene and you will be hearing all about it very shortly.
