Mon, 06 Aug 2012Why no MPCs? - MPCs are not drum machines, simple as. They *can* be, but so can laptops, for example, but you wouldn't include them.

Sadly a top 10 like this without any audio examples is rather pointless.

Mon, 06 Aug 2012Well to excuse the lack of the MPC, it seems that everything they chose has internal sounds. This explains the SP-12 being in there while the SP-1200 is not. To me the SP-1200 and MPC60 should be 1 and 2 with the Rolands, Linn, DMX, etc after it.

Mon, 06 Aug 2012agreed with pipecock. also, not sure if they qualify (don't see why they wouldn't) but where is the MPC series? seems silly not to include at least one of the models, especially since most of the drum machines listed are hard to find and much easier and more affordable to simply sample.

Mon, 06 Aug 2012Some of these choices are pretty stupid. I know it'd be heavy on Roland to include the 707 and 606, but those are both sick as well. If I had to pick a newer drum machine to make the list, it'd have to be the Korg Electribe ER-1. Kind of changed the game a bit.

I'm teaching an online class entitled Personal Sound Concepts. This link is an interview I did with Cyclic Defrost about it recently. The class revolves around listening to the world differently, recording sound, editing with an ear towards memory association, and generally opening up one's conception of their work and how to complete it.
