Only a small percent of you will qualify for this one, but it's worth a shoutout. Underage is a festival for kids offering them the chance to kick up dust club style. Expect a blend of indie/rock/electronic music and soft drinks in London’s Victoria Park on Friday 10th August.
Robotlab take Kraftwerk’s man-machine idea one step further by getting the robots to spin the music.
There are more than one million industrial robots around the world and what do they do in their spare time? They want to DJ of course. Well, this German ideas factory let them do just that.
‘Juke_Bots’ is an installation in which two robot arms becomes DJs. Each machine is surrounded by a circle of records which it can select and pick up. In front of each arm a record player is positioned so that the robot can put the needles on the records.
Machines that move, groove and speed up the records – DJ Mag’s top 100 will have more contenders this year.
But on a serious note, it’s all in the spirit of experimentation which has been brewing over the last few years. These robots don’t just show clever Germans and industrial machinery, they one up the competition, in the same way American street kids would 'battle' for street cred by throwing down their best moves. In an age of Ableton software, MP3s and iPods, this is pretty much the ultimate man-machine supremacy.
The Light Bar in Shoreditch, London is being threatening with demolition.
Some of you may already be familiar with this great venue, home to some of London's top underground parties such as 'Secretsundaze'. In the summertime people can be seen spilling out of the crowded interior into their grassy courtyard sipping fine cocktails and basking in the sun.
However, some years ago developers for the land the Light Bar is built on tried to demolish this amazing venue and they are once more threatening their lease with the same intention. Surely this building is worthy of conservation and genuinely represents an important part of Shoreditch's heritage. The venue are asking on their website for people to sign a petition to protect against the threatened demolition.
There's also a party you can attend to support the venue. On May Bank Holiday [socialise] are throwing an all day party as an eye opener to what's happening with tech house stalwart Nathan Coles behind the decks.
A petition will be passed around for all to sign to show their support on the day. So do yourself a favour and get yourselves down to The Light Bar for some underground house and a good cause!
Videos from the Sasha & Digweed yacht party, the One + One yacht party, Get Physical, Miss Kittin, DJ Bowlathon and more. The S & D party vids are really good because of the light but I suspect the cameraman might have been having a little too much fun. Enjoy!
Steve Bug says minimal is past its use-by date over at EQ Mag. Meanwhile bloggers debate the merits of cookie cutter minimal at Test Industries. "A well-known techno producer ‘went minimal’ during one afternoon as a joke. He sent it to a few friends who run labels and one of them signed it. The release sold 8,000 copies." Come on, name names!
