| #7 / Mon, 10 May 10 02:24 I gotta admit I cannot name a single track, but I am absolutely digging this shit. Much love RA for the consistent quality but can't we get back to the 60 min mixes?
I'm also slightly confused as to why there is no interview with this one? Maybe in the coming days.

ok, but then, scuba or untold don't either. If it doesn't fit your dubstep "definition", it would certainly fit a good Scuba mix (more than starkey for example)

| #24 / Mon, 10 May 10 16:37 i love it. really wasnt expecting to at all. i see the word dubstep and i switch off a fair bit of the time. the last podcast was complete dump but this is class. apart from the way too abrupt transitions at times, but ah well

| #25 / Mon, 10 May 10 16:58 er, Scuba was on the dubstep thing from early as a producer and label-boss, and he'd probably still tell you he makes it - even if the Berlin and the drum'n'bass influences are becoming more pronounced and the boundaries of what defines dubstep is becoming more and more unravelled. Ditto Untold.
Mike Slott makes hip-hop - just like the rest of the LuckyMe guys. That's where their background is, that's where they're coming from, and i'd wager they'd tell you they don't owe a thing to dubstep.

| #28 / Mon, 10 May 10 18:16 I love a few of Mike Slott's tracks- my lightbridge, and the roberta flack remix he did for flylo are both dope. I definitely wouldn't call this dubstep tho, abstract hip hop is a bit more accurate, but even that doesn't do justice- it's this future-tip post-IDM post-Dilla type sound.

This is a nice live set. It is reminiscent of some sort of Dilla meets Rephlex sound, as h34dup suggested. I will have to take this one on my next walk through Manhattan. Mike is right, you can be inspired without even realizing it in this city.

| #36 / Tue, 11 May 10 07:14 Why does it matter so much that this is considered dubstep? Do some of you need a label in order to know whether you will be running from a podcast or worshiping it to high heaven?
Isn't it a missed opportunity to not listen to music just as it is, labels or not?

| #37 / Tue, 11 May 10 07:15 Sweet. Some interesting choices for RA mixes lately. I've liked quite a few of Slott's tracks, so I'm looking forward to this. Also, his music doesn't have much to do with dubstep. It's more in the vein of artists like Flying Lotus, Ras G, Dimlite, Hudson Mohawke etc, none of whom are classified as dubstep artists. Anyway, my point is, who cares what this is, as long as it's good.

| #42 / Tue, 11 May 10 17:10 This was pretty good. I'm surprised at how coherent the mix as a whole was, taking into account the (intentionally) incoherent and skittery beats. I recognize probably just three of these tracks, so I'd love to see a playlist.

Mea culpa But it proves dubstep and hip hop are not so far away from each other maybe hip hop is the major root of dubstep? Your comment brings the question: how a style is defined? from the actual music? the roots? the label? from the whole mix or each track? from the sounds and structure or the spirit? Great and passionating debate. Don't try to close it with one sentence. RA: "so we naturally decided to bring him on board to play live (...) alongside Scuba, Untold and Jamie Vex'd at T Bar a couple of months back." -> so my comparison is not entirely pointless. I'll say what moment made me think it's sometimes closer from dbp than hiphop, you'll understand what my point is: -3 min -7 min 30 -20 min 30 - 32 minFor the rest you are all right: after re-listening, it's closer to Prefuse and stuff ANYWAY I like this podcast.

| #45 / Tue, 11 May 10 19:30 One more thing: for years I searched for the perfect bridge between 4x4 music and what i call (in the absence of a better word) experimental music (warp and stuff). Then dubstep appeared to my ears and i thank it was the perfect link, the missing piece between these distant worlds. Since this set fits in this definition, well I called it hastily dubstep, and personally I don't really care what it is, since it brings me a similar sensation.

| #49 / Wed, 12 May 10 09:54 Dubstep and hip-hop are of completely different genetic strains. Dubstep from UKG via Jamaican atmospherics, hip-hop from specifically american funk rhythms and jazz breaks. It is quite interesting the way dubstep has rigorously bleached the junglist jazz influences from its soundsystem soul.
There is a case to be made for saying everything originated in the African heartland of course but how tedious need this debate be?
