Beautifully done Todd. I teared up reading this. In particular Rob's final quote really resonated with me.

I left the D in 96, but it has never left me. Everything I do, everything I love, every person I interact with...Detroit is always there in the back of my brain, reminding me of where I came from. Detroit is and will always be the most inspiring place on earth for me because the music that it continues to give birth to decade after decade is proof that the human spirit can over come any obstacle. It's the soul in the machine.

Oh, and as a friend of his, please correct this - it's "Bryan Bickel", not "Brian Bickle". R.I.P. Bryan.

This is fixed now. Thanks for the correction!

Most emotional piece of literature on this website by far. Seriously.

Here a link to the Carol Marvin story from that Metro Times cover photo used in the article. Pretty interesting.

This is a phenomenal article that really captures the many points of view surrounding the event.

Todd touched on the many controversial elements over the years without making the article political or slanted. By the end it made all the drama seem like a small insignificant part of something that is truly bigger than all of us.

On a personal level it brought back so many memories and experiences and made me feel truly proud and honored to be involved with it's production today.

This year will be a great continuation of the legacy.

"Tim Price: I remember Rich played a couple of minutes long, and the city charged the festival $100 for every minute. So here I am in charge of cutting the power, and Rich was saying, "I don't care, I'll pay it!" The crowd was going crazy"

I could quote this all day. Let's get to the festival already!!!

Amazing feature.

I've never been to the DEMF, but reading this its hard to not want to visit the festival and the city, just to try and tap into some the spirit that is so evident in the people that are trying their best to keep the scene alive in the right way.

Respect.

great read, and fascinating at the same time, even if it took me 3 lunch breaks to finish it all! ;)

I believe I still have the schedule booklet from 2000 DEMF that has the artwork featured on the header of this piece. I was blown away the moment I saw it and have been captivated by it ever since. I'll be hitting the Detroit Institute of Arts on Friday after I get in to see the Diego Rivera murals that inspired this DEMF artwork. It was this artwork that made me aware of the Diego Rivera murals at the DIA and really went deeper to show just how interconnected this all is to Detroit and the world.

Todd,

I hate to be a killjoy - because this really *is* the best thing I've ever read on RA.

But srsly, how on Earth can you have an Oral History with NO quotes at all from Carol Marvin?!?

If she refused to cooperate/participate, at least *say so*, so we don't sit here with a big "Huh?" over our heads wondering why someone so important (even if hated) to the first 2 festivals is completely absent from this. I mean, Jesus - even the Pistols' histories have quotes from both Lydon *and* McLaren.

Oh, and as a friend of his, please correct this - it's "Bryan Bickel", not "Brian Bickle". R.I.P. Bryan.

The first thing that I thought while I read this was where is Carol Marvin? While there were commentrs from those on her side, the lack of her participation was distracting to an otherwise excellent article.

RE: Mr.Intensity / RiotNrrrd, given Carol Marvin is in the list of people "spoken to", one could only assume she offered nothing of value. And I thought Derrick May was also a notable exception.

--

Otherwise, nothing short of an excellent story. I had no idea the DEMF went through so many changes of management not to mention, names and brands over the course of the past decade.

It would have been nice if at least one quote from her was used even if it did not add any insight to what happened in 2001. I noticed that Carl's quotes did not directly address the situation, which is fine.

Wonderful article. I love the photo of Derrick, Carl and Richie.

I'm not from Detroit, and have never been to the festival, so I may be wrong, but one thing that really stands out from reading this history is how the festival has kind of turned it's back on Detroit.

From initially being a celebration of (primarily black) Detriot life; using local artists, and really being embraced by the local population; it now appears to be a (very well run) more standard international techno event. I'm sure it's great - but what I took from reading the article was that the festival has lost that initial community spirit, and is now used as a way of bringing the monied techno tourist into town.

Shout me down if I'm wrong

Amazing, stunning, beautiful, mesmerizing. Detroit is such an inspiration despite all the hardships they went through through the years, respect to the innovators!
