RA Feature
A new breed of Italian producers are following in the footsteps of Donato Dozzy's signature hypnotic sound. RA's Todd L. Burns charts the origins and the future of this unique brand of dark, trippy techno.

Finally a big hole in the history of the recent electronic dance music (and not only) has been filled. This article complete a puzzle that since yesterday was lacking some important pieces. Thanks RA.

There is a mistake in this row : "So it was natural when Dozzy and Giorgio Gigli had been working on music together to share it with ++Sandro Galli++, the store's owner. "

Sandro Nasonte is the Remix store owner. You confused with Sandro Galli, other ealry 90' techno scene dj/producer, very important in Rome during that period.

Thanks for the catch. That's been corrected now.

Hi,

Jumping on the topic, let's make a bit of advertising for a wonderful OBTANE remix of CATALEPSIA " Untilted 2 EP" which just been released.

Catalepsia - Untilted 2 (Original Mix)

http://metis-recordings.bandcamp.com/track/catalepsia-untilted-2-original-mix

Catalepsia - Untilted 2 (Area Remix)

http://metis-recordings.bandcamp.com/track/catalepsia-untilted-2-area-remix

Catalepsia - Untilted 2 (Obtane Remix)

http://metis-recordings.bandcamp.com/track/catalepsia-untilted-2-obtane-remix

Head Honcho of Métis Recordings CATALEPSIA comes back with a new dancefloor killer.

Chicago / Berlin based AREA (Wave Music / Ethereal Sound) is dropping a timeless and beautiful remix.

King of the Italian underground and co-head of the highly respected ZOOLOFT, OBTANE brings the track down to the bone with a stripped version of the original...

very cool article! i'm no techno historian so this is particularly informative.

if anyone is interested, check out my music blog in my signature. the fledgling mix series i've started features two italian-born dj/producers: nAX_acid and claudio PRC. both put together some uniquely deep sounds and talk more about their music.

nice to see the italians get some more love for putting out some excellent, deeeeep music!

For sake of clarity ACV lost all publishing rights on all Leo Anibaldi materials a decade ago,and as far as I know ACV should be out of business since then.
I seriously doubt that anything from Leo has been legally published on other then his own Cannibald Records since 2008.
By popular demand, 'Fusion1' and other great classics from leo will be out on cannibald in september 2010.
Www.cannibald.com for more information! Great piece anyway, thanks!

There are a lot of Italian dj/producers/labels that are putting out a lot of crappy music.
But there are also these great people and they deserve all the recognition we can give. I think the worst think for everyone is to not be appreciated in your own country.
An other Italian producer for which a have a lot of respect is Roberto Bosco, although he has a slightly different approach on techno music.

Italians. Yes indeed, they have sure enlightened and given a new depth to my techno world over the last few years, starting of course with the maestro, Donato Dozzy, and since then more wonderful discoveries. Happy days.
Everything from serene ethereal ambient, to deep and dark grinders.
Massive respect to my Italian friends. Italiani meraviglioso !

Nice article, one of the most interesting on RA in a while.

Congrats to all involved, more please!

Great article, great artists.

Between Gigli, Dozzy and Sabatini, these have been the most refreshing things to hear this year. Great article and i hope they get the recognition they are due.

Superb article, many thanks!
I would also have included Mike Parker at some point, which is to me the exact US cousin of Dozzy (they did stuf together actually).
And to complete the italian scene picture, the post Passarani/Nature branch is very good too, in a more electro/minimalwave/acid vibe, around the label Minimal Rome.

if you are interested in learning more about these sounds, at mnml ssgs we've previously featured (in one form or another) almost all of the artists mentioned here (as well as others, such neel, natural/electronic.system. etc)

Dino Sabatini excitedly shared with me one of the most interesting tracks that Anibaldi released on the label a few years ago.

this thread for me is totally incomplete...
in the next days i'd like to see a second part..
about the elettronic romana's crew you forgot rossella..
in my opinion rossella deserve to be mentioned more than claudio prc because she is a true techno veteran and she is part of thr first group of elettronica romana's producers

i think we're doing just fine here :)

of course the article could have mentioned many other producers, but i think it did a good job of discussing the italian techno scene with a sample of noteworthy 'newer' dj/producers as well as some of the older names... which i am not as familiar with, so i found this essay pretty insightful.

that said, i've become a huge fan of many of these guys... AND rossella. buf, i just found those records and i am REALLY liking them.
