I've got six out of these eight on my plastikman playlist [of fifteen]. what a juicy compilation

Take the silly voice-over off Ask Yourself and this is well nigh perfect - tho there's surely up to thirty other tracks that could just as easily sit in there. Merely a taster in which case Plastikman virgins should head off forthwith and purchase Sheet One, Musik and Consumed. If you can get your mitts on his System 7 and Robotman remixes all the merrier. The word 'genius' is bandied around so often it's lost all meaning, but in this case the epithet was well-deserved.

personally, 'artifakts' is my favorite 'album' and the one i recommend first to the uninitiated... how come none of those tracks are featured here?

maybe this will gain new fans after this world tour (from being at DEMF in detroit, and seeing lots of youtube footage, it seems to me like a lot of these tracks were featured in the live show)... but i guess this means no NEW plastikman music anytime soon.

Not bud stuff, but to be honesty, another re-release. Beatport if your really want the tracks or do some searching you'll find what you need. This unfortunately is just a small piece of a good marketing mix puzzle. True respect when I see some new plastik.

Why the hell does anyone think Hawtin has anything of even remote artistic value to contribute anymore, bar the pretty re-packaging of ancient material? Filter your opinions through the salty reality provided by the clothing line, the crappy haircuts and the Cube... the tracklistings provided 'live'... the gimmickry... the nebbishness of the 'give a shit' outsider turned surface-fixated insider. The route remains one way. There is no turnaround.

All I want from Plastikamn is a DVD or bluray recording of the performance at Movement 2010.

its also worth checking out the FUSE - Dimension Intrusion album on Warp. Its a stunning collection of ambient, acid, techno.

Bought this at the M-Nus ghost shop in Barcelona during Sonar even though I already had the tracks.

Altough I admire Richie for what he has achieved I am overjoyed that Minimal is now pretty much dead. For three years the underground scene was unimaginative and boring....now its fresh and exciting again

Full respect for what Hawtin has done as Plastikman. But this constant wave of compilations and re-releases/repressings of 15+ year old stuff is boring me to death. RA is reviewing this stuff waaaay too often. Wasn't techno about the future at some point?

I don't really think 'minimal' is dead, but it's looking back at its roots.

i just had to chime in with a big BLAH! this a 5? to me it sounds sooo dated, i really thought when i listened to this i would listen to a masterpiece of futuristic music, but in the end i got a glimpse of how impressed i was a teenager taking lots of drugs and comparing it to the music out at the time-
when i listen to this now, i can see more clearly than ever, it was about a right time and place and this ONLY. its no big surprise to me that this guy hasnt made any relevant NEW music.
im sorry to be soo darn honest with my opinion here, but i think if plastikman was a new product now, he wouldnt even get shelf space or a 5!
no need to worship the past, seriously- lets move forward and stop worshipping artists of yesteryear, especially when artists like mike ink and several others were doing the plastikman sound even before he was at the time....
please someone prove me wrong here....

Seriously? RA is fast losing my respect with regards to reviews. FIVE stars? Plus 8 has never stopped pressing any of these records.. so what's the point of a compilation? I appreciate the music and the label.. but shouldn't RA be giving bandwidth to artists to NEED exposure. This comp will make money with or without RA's support and it seems nobody on the list cares.

I know there's a strong trend among RA readers of hating Richie Hawtin (and loving classic house)... but in this case if you judge the music itself and forget about poses and trends, 5/5 is well deserved

Personally I think it deserves a 5. These tracks are classic pieces of electronic music that was so ahead of its time, as was Richie when he made them. I think the whole Plastikman era is not to be forgotten as it was such an influential time in techno music. Todd gave it an accuarate score in my eyes.This album is a celebration of Plastikman's best work that has stood the test of time. Job well done.

i appreciate and respect the past, the history and the nods due to pioneers in whatever form that looks like...but in classic electronic music culture trend, this idea is getting beat the f*** over the head...for example: I have FULL respect (and genuine love) for detroit as a city and a hotbed of innovation, but to be honest, am getting sick of reading features, reviews and pieces put out to repeatedly pay homage regarding anything with 'detroit' slapped near it. it's not some mystery for anyone with even a little knowledge on EM, the importance of detroits past. yes they deserve every bit of attention they have received, but those cats have been and will always be doing it regardless of the press. thats the realness of the city and the amazing minds it fosters...guess it would be cool to hear about some place new...some new talents...some new energy into this so called progressive scene....and it's out there!! people are doing good things everywhere....plastikman is extremely significant in a lot of ways...but i'm with the others who want to hear about something fresh, in the present and less reviews on compilations and conversations of yesterday.

time for mediocrity to END and people like dinosaur hawtin to go back to their caves

I believe it is part of a money making venture, but if you had the ability to pull if off after being away for 15 years wouldn't you do it? I know I sure would this world we live in is all about C.R.E.A.M. Hawtin has seen a chance & he has taken it.

I think this compilation is more about nostalgia, I love everything on here but I would have preferred a few new unreleased songs. However, this was one of the best reviews I've read of a Plastikman production, Todd nailed it.

To all the richie haters out there, GROW UP! it doesnt make you 'cool' to go against anything that is popular. richie has released enough material under his various guises to cement his legacy, he doesn't need to release stuff now just to keep up with the trends. and how is this false worship to plastikman, someone please tell me whose been more influential in electronic music in the past 20 years than Richie Hawtin! he might be good mates with richie but todd knows what he's on about.

Agreed.
Not only he was an artist who could reinvent himself, but also did well on business, and thats an important part too! Every artist needs money to buy new equipment, pay the rent or whatever.
Also he helped new artists to become successful, an Argentinian kid like Barem with such a great talent wouldn't have the same space if a guy like Richie didn't help him.

I'm not going to get into all the BS back-and-forth, "is Richie a sellout?" bickering and the like. He had a great performance as Plastikman at DEMF. His Decks, FX, 909 mix is one of my all-time favorites. He's made some absolutely ground-breaking productions.

But a "greatest hits" getting a 5/5 is silly, nonetheless.
