Jack Sparrow - Circadian cover
RA Review
The "dubstep album" is a difficult thing; it's no coincidence that the best are only tangentially related to the genre. Burial's albums were spooky garage, 2562's Unbalance unstable techno, Kode9's Memories of the Future steeped in dub, Guido's Anidea leaning towards grime and poppy songcraft...

Also, half these tracks have been in major podcast rotation for the last few months, so its really good to find a bunch of them in one go!

Essential album.

first track is a joy orb impersonation and nothing from the rest strikes even a blip compared to other stuff around this year. going through the motions dubstep thats very forgettable.

so Krull, good enough for Pinch / Tectonic but not for you, eh? Or I suppose you don't rate either...

The fact Pinch has used at least 4 tracks from this in at least 2 mixes I've heard this year says all you need to know...

Quality tools for the working-dubstep DJ.

Pinch's curatorial skills rarely miss.

'Quality tools for the working-dubstep DJ'

thats about right than, im not a working dubstep dj, and i'd give it a 2. this album shouldnt share the same score as 2562's unbalance and martyn's great lengths.

Tectonic delivers the goods once more. Ace production, well 'logical' tracks and I fully agree with the score that is given above.

BORED of the 'this is dubstep/this is not dubstep' discussions. Is it that difficult to admit that this, 2562 and martyn's albums are good, each in its style, and they are called 'dubstep' because they have much more in common with each other than they could have with Chemical Brothers?

Agree with krull on this one. Pretty boring album.

Heard this all the way through just once so this is far from a final judgement on the album, but I have to say that upon first listen, this is an excellent album with a couple of weak spots that keep it from reaching the level of Unbalance, Great Lengths and the other great dubstep albums. It is however significantly better than Guido's album which, in my opinion, was nowhere near the level of quality of the other albums mentioned in this otherwise excellent review. Stand out tracks for me would be Loveless, Dread, Relapse and Regress, not to mention Terminal and Chase which I've listened to more than 100 times now.

Also this - 'the drums don't merely pound and clink, they surround, enchant and conjure.' - Perfectly put. I think that, and the percussion, makes Jack Sparrow's music stand out. The heavy, rolling subbass does help as well.

This album would have worked well if it was a bunch of separate 12's but it just sounds monotonous as a full length.

as the man says we all have equal rights to our opinions. and Andrew has captured beautifully how this album touches alot of people.
I myself cannot relate to a comment of this album being boring, with each song having such diferent texture and representing different musical elements.
Yes maybe it is more subtle that some present 'dubstep' releases. As the author says this album does not compromise. It is what it is. You cant criticise something green for not being red.

Disappointed with this Album. Don't think it deserved a 4.5.
