Depending on how much you wanna play along with Gold Panda's quest to hide his identity behind his recording moniker, his Discogs page maintains dude also goes by Derwin Panda. 2.5. You've got to be kidding. This is probably the best electronic album of the year. It's consistent in quality and hangs to gether well as a long player, something that can be said for very few electronic albums. Yes, it's inspired by what came before it but that never seems to be a problem on these pages if the reference point is 'classic' deep house or detroit techno does it?

i second that, its one my favourite albums of the year...
but im ignoring the 'rating' system of this (otherwise amazing) site anyway for quite a while now.
its the opinion of ONE single author, so just ignore it and keep enjoying this beautiful music :)

@ Ragie: I totally agree. Well said.

I disagree 100%. This album has some amazing tunes. You? Same Dream China? India Lately? I'm With Yo But I'm Lonely? 2.5 is a travesty. People, please ignore this review and listen to the album.

I like Gold Panda but not 100% convinced by the album, gets a little samey and repeative over the course of the whole record. But when he gets it right its great.

didn't like the album, it's a mess of styles & sounds without any goal, he's just saying "hey, look how eclectic and I am! I'm awesome!" without caring about the soul of the album. Definitely one of the problems of the internet era: kids over-collecting music for free and then trying to put lots of influences in their albums. Would have been better if it was divided in two/three EP's.

It may not deserve a 5, but 2.5 is definitely too little for this album, there are some great tracks there like You, Vanilla Minus, Snow&Taxis, etc... It is really interesting to check the rating RA sometimes gives. Something like 70% of the cases it is super subjective and all the comments are in the other direction.

Overly harsh review, very good album in my book. Definitely a grower to, hear elements I hadn't notice previously with each listen. RECOMMENDED.

No it's not, not at all. Sure there are similarities but does The Field album have hip hop instrumentals, for example?

To say it's a clone is a complete exaggeration.

RA really needs to do something about the spam/bots ruining the forums and article commentaries... Apart from this; harsh review, but then again the album doesn't possess the strongest desire to be universally loved. It's good in my ears, and it wants to be personal...

Yes, it sounds like the Field and it also sounds like Four Tet, but there are references to styles of dubstep, hip hop and R & B that can't be found in the work of either of these artists. Most importantly it's varied enough to hold your interest and has strong melodies. From Here We Go Sublime is a classic but not something I can listen to from start to finish too easily - it's a little samey.

I really enjoy the album and yes, I placed the vinyl between The Field and Four Tet. But that is a place of honour.

Next @ Paco Osuna
This album wasn't my precise cup of tea, but I feel the album overall fares better than a 2.5. Definitely a harsh review. While some of the sonics may be samey to the Field, the beatwork is definitely something else and has its own niche.

Superb debut album from Gold Panda, something that is not reflected in this review...

I think the reviewer has been hurt by an over-understanding of Gold Panda's genre. Comparing it to From Here We Go Sublime, which is a repetitive lesson in What not To Listen To, is just ridiculous. Gold Panda is years ahead of that, and I am certainly expecting his music to continue improving the way it has over the past few years.

Derek Miller gave this album a 2.5, but awarded Reboot's 'Shunyata' a 3.5... Something isn't quite right there.

i think the main problem is the rating scale here on RA and how inflationary the points are used.
normally i just wouldnt give a damn about a bad review of an album i really like.
but here on RA almost every album gets at least a 3 (like 85 or 90% of the reviews are >3 ?!) and 3 little paragraphs, which imho just isnt enough.

and now this wonderful albumg gets a 2.5 and im upset, just because i think its not fair... because im used to this mediocre ratings and this mediocre reviews.

i should just stop caring :)

I love Four Tet, I love The Field, and I love Gold Panda who has found his own style. One of the best electro records of the year. Review and rating are so wrong.

Reviews here are so biased. Consider the large audience of electronic music.

While I disagree with the rating, I also can't help but agree with most of the review. I mean Same Dream China, which is a beautiful song, is a complete Four Tet ripoff, and Snow and Taxis is a ripoff of The Fields. It's one thing to be inspired by certain artists, but to completely ape producers (especially when they have highly idiosyncratic styles) without really adding anything to them is pretty off putting.

On the other hand, some of the songs on this album are just really, really good on their own merits. It's a tough one to rate but I'd give it a 3.5 or atleast a 3, based on the RA grading system. The 2.5 is usually reserved for mostly rubbish albums, and this one is far from it.

Time and again house and techno records that are nothing out of the ordinary, but are genuinely enjoyable, receive good reviews on here. So why then, when a genuinely enjoyable album that may not be entirely original is reviewed, is it lambasted with that most rare of 2.5/5's?

I believe this rating was once cast on an L-Vis 1990 release and now his Night Slugs label is Label Of The Month. Guess we shouldn't panic too much then.

hmmm, I don't have the field's album at all.. but based on it's own strengths I would give this album at least a 3.5 or maybe a 4. It's something I can listen through from start to finish and not get bored with.. and the tracks are mostly excellent

The comparisons to Four Tet and The Field are justified, but f**k me if this isn't fantastic.

I AGREE, 2.5 stars means whoever reviewed the album is biased. It's fresh, and oozes quality.
I'd give it 4.

Yeah disagree with the 2.5 rating but the actual critique of the album was reasonably fair I thought. Although It's alot more rhythmicaly diverse than "from here we go sublime" and I don't think it is fair compare the two albums. "sublime' was way more focussed in both style and structure. Lucky Shiner moves around alot more, is more introspective in parts and less lucid as a whole piece. It's still a great album. Prob going in my top ten for the year.

A Decent album, intersting and different. Deserves a 4.

That's bull, i loved the album and 2,5 is a ridiculously low and unfair rating.

Great album. Unfairiest review ever: yes, it sounds like The Field, but it's absurd to consider that a problem, because it stands on its own perfectly well. It's like bashing Zero7's first album for sounding like 'Moon Safari' (which actually, many reviewers did).

Forget the review - it's a great album, as many RA readers seem to recognize. 'Soundscape' is an entirely inappropriate label for this sound.

And Gold Panda sounds less like the Field than any Ostgut artist sounds like any other Ostgut artist (And I happen to still love Ostgut). And that doesn't stop RA from creaming its pants over any vintage-sounding release from the Berghain crew.
