 | RA Review It's old news that these days spinning vinyl has become something of an stodgy practice, championed largely by the lovingly classicist, defiantly low-tech or the fashionably retro. With the increased roll-out of four-deck software and hardware like Allen&Heath's latest unit, the Xone:DX, however, it..

| #5 / Tue, 26 Oct 10 20:12 looks like a fisher price toy like most of serato/traktor controllers... Can't replace a SL1200 or CDJ touch...

| #8 / Tue, 02 Nov 10 21:55 Xone 4d + traktor is not even 'djing' anymore. It is taking the idea to a new level. It's more like remixing tunes on the fly, looping and bending them about with effects, putting all of that together and bam, new tune. Throw your own productions in there and it becomes an unstoppable idea that is becoming what I like.
I have 'DJ'ed' for over 12 years and I love turntables, but things must change. Beatmatching two tunes goes as far as beatmatching two tunes.... New era. Time for new ways of performing music.

| #9 / Tue, 02 Nov 10 22:00 What I am curious about is why designers of this technology (and people) are still holding onto this 'wheel of steel' idea. The platter. I think dj'ing is a lot of fun, but it only goes so far in my opinion. Get rid of the platter, get rid of this idea that beat matching is essential to a creative set and there are new things that can be achieved.

I love there products and some of their designs blows you away. But this is just wrong.
I don't know how it will preform, but I do hope it will.
Cheers

| #13 / Mon, 29 Nov 10 03:43 Also on the comments on dj's using records, I see Ricardo Villalobos using more records or cddj..I use Serato but I use the record control and I integrate my records into my mixes..Nothing worst then seeing some "hot-shot" so called djing not using headphones and just using computer, controllers and nothing much else..I love vinyl..

| #16 / Tue, 07 Dec 10 10:26 I started with 1200's in late '93 and loved them, then when family commitments came along, or the fact my wife didn't want our tiny front room looking like a DJ booth I sold them on. I tried CDJ1000MKII's and couldn't really get a kick out of it, burning CDs all the time was too much of a pain.
It was around 2 years ago that I got back into it again with the VCI-100 and Traktor, then started playing with ableton a bit, but Traktor was the thing I was mainly using. However.......I had a go with a VCI-300 and Serato Itch and was completely sold, it was nice and simple, which reminded me of the 1200s in a big way, it made Traktor seem like a cluttered mess.
Saw the Xone: DX at the BPM show, although I was going to have a play around with the CDJ2000's, and thought it was a lot better in the flesh so checked it out along with the S4 and compared to my VCI-100 and M-Audio Firewire sound card. The sound quality from the Allen & Heath alone was enough for me to not consider the S4, full, warm and just so much more authority.
At this point the the S4 was out and it was down to the Xone: DX or CDJ2000's, the fact the 2000's were 4x the price and didn't really offer much more other than industry standard made them start to look seriously overpriced. The 900's didn't have a good enough waveform and at only £300 cheaper I would always think 'should have spent the extra' and the 350's and 850's have no quantised looping, so not even worth considering for me.
Itch is getting The Bridge support in 2.0 from early next year and so I decided to go for it, as the mixtape feature is a nice selling feature, having said that within 4 hours of using itch I realised I will never go back to Traktor again, I love it.
It isn't 1200's, but it is nice and simple and has that same sort of feeling.
If you are a DJ that likes to ride the mix and blend your transitions give it serious consideration, it works really well with excellent quantised looping (added in version 1.7 a couple of weeks back, and all upgrades are free btw) and enough effects to spice your set up, there are also midi maps for Traktor and you can map it to what you want, I have it mapped to ableton as well, but to be honest now I have itch I hardly use that.
Pioneer have obviously copied Itch for their Rekordbox software, it is pretty much the same, going from one to the other is all very similar.
At £1050 it is pricey, but shop around, I paid £750 for mine and I think it is worth every penny.
Few little niggles from me about it. I only use two channels, may stick a loop in one of the others but very rarely, so I would like to see the default channels as 1 and 4 so they are on the outside sliders. Headphones could be a bit louder.
And that is all, I would give it a 9/10.

| #19 / Sun, 26 Aug 12 11:37 I own this controller and my only complaint is the rotary pitch adjust. And the greatest compliment I can give it is it's solid build quality. Pick up any other controller and they feel plastic and cheap. This thing is built like a tank. And is almost just as heavy lol.
