this was a very bad move,,tokyo was not effected by anything other than power shortages, the media has ran wild with mostly hear say second hand translations, this will leave a bad taste with the japanese youth market,,,i was in japan last week,,there was no reason to bail....not cool.

Totally agree, an ugly move indeed although Red Bull probably have their economic reasoning for it..

ha!? you joking?...you obviously don't know anything about RBMA then if you're not. It's probably one of the best music projects going, is run by the most passionate of music people and you only need to look at their website and the people that have either lectured (non of whom get paid) or gone through the academy to understand the value it brings to the table.

firstly, what is up with all you haters on these threads ?...I don't see where all this negativity is coming from and you're making comments about things you obviously know nothing about.

Have any of seen, heard or actually read about what the Red Bull Music Academy does ? It might be a huge corporation selling drinks in cans but you can't knock the RBMA. Artists such as Aloe Blacc and Nina Kraviz were both participants at the academy I attended in Melbourne and both of these people are now making some serious noise with their music.

and come on people...why are you slating their decision to move the academy ?
do u know how much it costs and how many people this project involves ?
and whats to say it can't be held there next year.....

have a lovely weekend and start dating not hating x

I have every reason to hate-I live in Japan and am well informed about the nuclear situation via sources in and out of Japan, within and outside of the government, including at MIT. I have a reasonably good picture that Tokyo is safe and will be even safer by the time the academy would have taken place here.

The decision to move the RBMA is a move that, while not without merit, seems to based on the same ill-informed information that is flying wildly around the media these days. So in a way I guess they can't be fully blamed. But one thing is certain: this reflects really poorly on a corporation with huge exposure around the world. Oh look: Japan is in need, but let's just save our own asses.

And just to be clear: I've never been to the RBMA as an attendee, but I do know that their presence in a city usually is accompanied by events that others can take part. So it's not just about the attendees' and lecturers'/performers' well-being, but everybody's.

A little support, even if in spirit or morale, can go a long way. I suppose those of us who are disappointed in RBMA shouldn't have expected such upstanding behavior from what now appears to be a typical herd-mentality.

PS, What is with all the spam?! Wrong audience, you commercial bastards.

Two more things:

1. As of today, the U.S. Government has lifted the travel warning to Japan, by way of official notice from the embassy.

2. Red Bull Music Academy says the planning process takes a year, which I believe, but then is able to turn around an alternative location in a matter of weeks. Artists and applicants cancelling is not a great explanation - we all know there are more in each camp eager to fill the posts.

Bummer. Prediction: RB will regret this and try to make up with an over-the-top version of it in Tokyo at some point in the next five years.

Looks like it has not stopped...Tokyo was shook strongly today-

I don't think it is fair for anyone to judge a company's decision based on saftey regards, because if nothing is certain then the risk can be much to large, and at the rate the quakes are hitting, I would have to say better be safe then sorry.

Banks are financing it all for Red Bull and since banks do not like any kind of risk , anytime, I'm unsurprised and certainly unimpressed.

Peace !

Who the hell organize this interviews? What a disaster, it is really annoying. Having the great opportunity of chating and asking questions to Tony and is all silly and mundane questions. Starting with the interviewer. And let´s not talk about the technical issues. Seriously, if you invite relevant people to chat at least have the whole thing organized properly.

I thought it was a great talk for someone who doesn't know too much about audio engineering

Agreed, really enjoyed that, just because we can enjoy something doesn't mean we understand how it came about or in-fact how to create something with similar qualities, that's what RBMA is all about, initiating an understanding of different topics....also agreed that Gerd Janson sometimes doesn't come across as the best host but he kinda just leaves the guest to talk which works just as well as channelling the questions...

In some way I knew that I made the wrong decision on choosing the TC Electronics konnekt 48 between that and the Echo for purchasing. My concerns come out here to be true.

@bhbognar

Get a grip would you. They obviously made the decision to move at a time when the overall ramifications of the Fukushima reactor situation was not entirely clear. It's not like Japan there hasn't been an outpouring of support in the form of money and events from artists in the electronic music community.

You sound like a spoiled brat who didn't get what they wanted for their birthday.

I am happy to see Todd Burns doing more of these interviews. The other RBMA moderator has done some great on-camera interviews, but I think he may be getting burned-out.
I was very offended by the way he treated Trevor Horn in the last video I watched. It was disrespectful, rude and condescending. I had to stop watching it because I kept cringing an behalf of Mr. Horn. Maybe some new blood for a minute might not hurt the RBMA lecture series.
