Battles - Gloss Drop cover
RA Review
When Battles joined Warp five years ago, they were the latest signing to make purists question if the label had lost sight of its electronic roots. But, more than !!! and Maximo Park before them, the New York band proved their relevance, with a debut album ( Mirrored ) that shattered their live inst..

I really enjoyed this release actually. Then again, it doesn't compare with some of the other post/math-rock albums out this year (e.g. The Psychic Paramount's 'II')

Nice !!!!!

This review's a bit harsh, almost a Pitchfork slant in their w/ the low blows. Considering this is a rock album, and nothing to do w/ some day dream of 'the good ol' days of Warp,' I think it's really good. But, who the hell am I?

'Math rock is a rhythmically complex guitar-based style of experimental rock that emerged in the 1980s. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords'

Or so the all-knowing Wikipedia tells us...

Saw them play for B EP/C EP release, Mirrored release and now Gloss Drop release.. I have to say that, live, while Braxton's absence is notable, the remaining members aren't performing behind a gaping Tyondai shaped void. They were fantastic, they simultaneously rocked out and were extremely danceable. If only all of the 'too cool to dance' indie kids in the crowd felt the same.

Fair review. Mediocre follow up to what was and still is a quite enjoyable first album.
