| #14 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 16:14 Nice slice of the D ... I've been here all my life and can relate to the range of feelings expressed... I'm not leaving either. I really liked the section on youthville... Good stuff guys.

| #19 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 16:51 Jesus, the hiphop beat that Ruel kid was knocking out sounded pretty fucking hot. I think 14 is around the time kids really get a proper feel for music, so would be great to see Mike Huckaby take his talent forward. For those who haven't seen yet, this documentary on the BBC last year on Detroit is worth a look - documentaryheaven.com/requiem-for-detroit/

Next @ Get Down | #22 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 17:26 Indeed, the pictures are just great. Mike Huckaby is doing a great job over there, love the 11 year old kid going home, having a snack and making beats for the rest of the day. Looking forward to the next episodes!

| #23 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 17:40 So inspiring. Seeing Mike Huckaby teach kids how to make beats is amazing. I've visited many times for the festival and those were some of the best times of my life. God bless the soul and the sound of the D.

| #28 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 18:25 I played a show in Detroit (only my 3rd or 4th there) on the weekend. A special, broken, heartbreaking place....and very-much a new-generation of Detroit producers/djs on the rise, doing new, exciting, hybrid things....exciting to see. And people there always so kind to me (quite aside from anything 'techno')...with some better-infrastructure/public-transport, there's no reason why Detroit couldn't experience a real revolution. The fact remains that people are leaving the city, slowly but surely, in droves....but there's so much goodness there, and problematically little support for keeping people in the city.

 |
| #30 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 18:31 Also (and not so often covered in articles like this) is the fact that Detroit has a pretty dope cultural-mix...lots of Middle-Eastern families moving in, keeping shit fresh....and plenty of fantastic food in Greektown

I was thinking the same thing... the quality is incredible. But I also want to give props to Mike Huckaby for being such an amazing mentor. I wish they had beat making classes in school when I was growing up.

| #37 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 19:30 Why is it that every Electronic Music Documentary about Detroit has to show the absolute worst parts of the city? Places I haven't even seen and I've lived here all my life. It may be interesting "artistically" to some, but give us a break for once. There's two sides to every story. Very well put together though...but still.

I think that this is what I was getting at - the unfortunate tragedy of showing the same parts/people. And bless, Mike H and co and all the "older" cats have been such an inspiration, but to neglect to showcase/highlight a lot of the current DIVERSITY of Detroit and her people feels like a way to put the city in the 'safely nostalgic' box - and feels a little patronising, in a way, in the same way that talking about Berlin (where I live) purely in terms of Hawtin/Viallalobos/Kreuzberg/Prensaluerberg can serve to limit the diversity of the vision... Its like whem people say "where's Theo etc?" - the fact is that these individuals are very frequently covered in docos like these (which is great!), BUT there's a lot going on in Detroit which kids DON'T know about that is also valuable to share to keep the "Real Scene" vibrant and growing too....which is also what Mike Huckaby is so clearly excited about. That 10-year old dude making beats...man...THESE ARE the people I want to hear more about!

| #43 / Tue, 09 Aug 11 20:10 http://www.detroitluv.com - check out some of the producers/promoters/locals who are really keeping the scene in Detroit kicking still....crews like DETEK and Beard'd, producer/djs like Ataxia, Stone Owl, Gabe Real and, of course, Kris Wadsworth...just to name a tiny handful!
