I think it's totally fitting to pick a DJ with a long time love of disco, a long time love of setting up club nights and a hugely loyal underground fan base of guys and girls

Exactly; much worse than the fact this mix doesn't fit its audience & medium - an electronic music site - it doesn't represent the man himself either.

Relax Jonny. You're right. I'm an idiot of the highest order. It's pretty clear though that he recorded this mix largely for his own gratification. I think it's rubbish.

This is like watching a quentin tarantino film on Acid.

Anyone not feeling this check out his stellar Sarcastic Disco mix to see what he sounds like when he's on top of his game:

01. [0:00:00]
02. [0:01:40]
03. [0:03:25] The Tornados - Telstar (ID Version)
04. [0:05:40] "This is a very special day for me" vocals
05. [0:07:50] "You got the..." vocals
06. [0:17:00] Eniaro - Ofo The Black Company
07. [0:21:30] Ambient track
08. [0:24:50] Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Time Captives

09. [0:30:35] Estrak Lancios - Cosmopolitan Wave LP side A

14. [0:46:55] Sounds like a '70s progrock tune
15. [0:56:45] Dirty Fan Male - Dear Sexy Charmaine
16. [0:57:10]
17. [1:03:35]
18. [1:16:45] Sounds like krautrock
19. [1:21:20]
20. [1:28:20]
21. [1:32:50]
22. [1:35:30] Aura - Last Stop

Actually like someone mentioned above, pretty much the whole A-Side of Estrak Lancios' Cosmopolitan Wave LP is played in its' entirety from the 30 minute mark onwards for 17 minutes or so!

Diggin' the mix, but this is most definitely NOTHING like his live club sets at all, which, judging by the few that we've seen, are incredibly bad-ass. (if any of y'all are in Chicago on March 24th you can catch him at Smart Bar, with Nicolas Jaar playing live with full band upstairs in Metro the same night *wink*)

Clear to whom? Fair play if you think it's rubbish. But it's not fair for you to assume someone's motivation. To assume he did this for his own gratification. Harvey has been pleasing ears for years and years. I don't think he'd have a hard time knocking out a mix of unknown disco edits, classic house, and funk. Hell, he does that week in, week out in clubs. Maybe he wanted to give those of us who like more than just house/techno/dubstep something different.

If anyone has ever witnessed Harvey play one of his legendary 8 to 10 hour sets, there is no question, no argument.

Harvey is legend. Next level. Unfuckwithable.

Hats off to RA for making this happen!

Absolute legend. Great mix for the open mind.

I remember he said in an interview once back in the 90s that there's no point claiming to be some super star DJ when you are barely out of your teens cos you cannot possibly have listened to enough different music in your life. Always stuck with me.

Nice one RA, seems like only Harvey can create so much controversy by just playing a few records.
P.s. Opening track is Time Out by Terror Train.

Sounds very rock-star like i.e. self-indulgent, with wilfully hip and obscure references. Hmmm, what's this? "Telstar" thru a delay, being filtered.. awesome.
I'm gonna need better drugs...

LOL, agreed on the sentiments.

Excellent choice, RA. As is the problem with most truly great DJs such as Optimo, Laurent Garnier, Mark Farina etc., a podcast of even 2 hours will not convey their true abilities. The best you can hope for is a bit of insight into their taste and influences, which I feel this mix has provided. The same people knocking this will be praising the next 37 minute jumble of stale dubstep or dry as bone minimal that comes along whipped together in Ableton at a Starbucks. To each their own, I guess!

Lol I am assuming you are reffering to Tokimonsta? I can see why some people would not enjoy portions of this mix since there are some rather dry spots, but assuming this was recorded live I know Harvey does this from time to time to recycle the people on a floor. But what I find most disturbing is that people were making judgement calls without even listening to the whole thing! Just skipping through bits and shit! Just goes to show how riddled with A.D.D. the average person is these days. No suprise that this mix is a bit polarizing, but I am a bit suprised at the response thus far.

Psychedelic edit 70s fx looped tracks.

Perfect. We've finally found the dj that plays for countless tripped up hours in a k-hole.

The djs dj huh???

The man is an absolute LEGEND!!! There simply aint too many dj's who could pull off the kind audacious mix Harv's has and or who have the musical knowledge and understanding to dig so deep. RESPECT!!!

I totally agree with all those who don't like this. I mean, why can't we have more dubstep meets techno with a bit of house mixed in? That's not stale at all. What about Crosstown Rebels-style "house" which is basically pitched down prog for people who claim to have hated prog? Love it!

Bunch of boring bellends. The lot of you.

lol

I have respect for this dude, also listen a couple his mixes, but this one was quite hard for me 'cause I had bad hangover.

That's right, the people don't come because you grandiose motherfuckers don't play shit that they like. If you played the shit that they like, then people would come, simple as that.

What a character. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this in the car this morning. Had me laughing, bopping my head, saying what the fuck, and sining all in one set.
This set definitely gets my approval!

Loving all the 'heads' pretending to like this rubbish just because it's Harvey. Embarassing.

Wow. A DJ trying to educate some people and open some minds? Who would´ve thought? A completely unheard of concept!

Even if there´s only 10 people here who heard this and felt motivated to go and explore some new stuff and find some new artists or styles which they weren´t familiar or didn´t think they like, until now, I´m pretty sure Harvey would think his job as a DJ has been acomplished.

Great left field mix of rarities, with Harvey style sense of humor running through it. One that I'm not going to tire of for a while. DJ Harvey doing an RA mix? It was never going to be straight forward. The man's a prankster

rad mix dudes, I'm only here for this mix. I love all these fools bitchin about it, doesn't belong on an electronic music website? the whole thing is dripping in analogue electronics, it's freakin tasty!

Theres no way the guy became a legend by playing shit like this! This mix is absolute garbage!!! The only enjoyable thing about this mix is reading comments from people who liked it trying to explain what they liked about it. If he has this sense of humor that a bunch of people are claiming, hes probably laughing his ass off at you idiots summizing why and how he came up w/ a set so deep and thought provokingly outside the box as this. WTF RA..... should've been Villalobos. Anyways, you're website is still the greatest thing on the internet. Cheers and heres to the next 300

I like it cuz he played the sort of records I like to buy and listen to, that is my justification.

Jesus, some people are boring. Harvey definitely isn't one of them.

By that logic, every piece of music recorded since about 1950 is 'electronic' and thus deserves exposure on this website.

Not necessarily , I was just pointing out that there was a lot of electronic music in Harvey's mix, for example, the electronic beat in the Arthur Brown track is supplied by one of the first drum machines, the wonderful Bentley Rhythm Ace. But your right to mention 1950 onwards, some of the most innovative electronic music was produced in the 50's and 60's (Joe Meek, Bruce Haack), I think the point of Harvey's mix is to get people who think it's ridiculous think a different way, that and having a bit of fun too......

A guy who's legendary for making people dance in clubs...

makes a mix for the world's biggest website devoted to dancing in clubs...

but makes a mix nobody can dance to.

Why do you think people won't be able to dance to this? I'm at 1'18" and it's totally tribal with some ace trippy flutes and some wigged out psychedelic guitar....take your shoes off dude and let em sink into the sand.....x
