RA News
Due to hearing damage, the Chicago legend has most likely played out for the last time. We chat with him about why that might not be such a bad thing.

I see this as new chapter and look forward to hearing the sounds that make us feel nice :- ). I have had the pleasure of hearing Larry live many times and will definitely miss the opportunity to hear him live again. The music continues and Larry remains the musical innovator he has always been.

damn thats a shame, let this be a lesson to all you DJs - get custom earplugs early in your career and USE THEM. nothing is more important than your hearing when you're in this line of work. The party in detroit he played in 2009 with Theo Parrish was one of the best I've ever been to, sooo much fun, just straight up no pretense awesome house music. Glad to hear he's cool with it though, when its time its time...

Respect Larry I guess you must be bored of playing to kids by now as the club scene is in disarray. Unless your playing party music or techno influenced music for the kids on drugs.

lol ok mr jaded clubber....WHY CANT IT BE LIKE THE OLD DAYS??

he always has actually..look up his discography. also as far as i know this is old news, he's definitely said this somewhere before.

Managed to see Larry twice in 2011. A true master and one of the friendliest guys you could ever hope to meet to boot.

I'm sure he'll still have plenty of fun in the studio :-)

These are the consequences of long and exhausted work, impacts almost every producer/dj in the bizzzz

One of the best producers and djs this culture has ever produced to still be making music after all these yrs and to have so many different sounds and styles. Ive only gotten to hear him 4 times live and it was great. I look forward to continuing purchasing his music when possible and available.

Larry is def a legend and really wish he could have had some sort of retirement party but i def understand the risk it would have come with. Hopefully he will be ok with finances as well.

that shows how much we need to protect our ears from constant pounding...using ear plugs while cruising around clubs when we're not working seems like a good idea now..lot's of love Larry, thanks for all the wonderful music moments you've shared with us

Health is the most important thing. Looking forward to hearing more music from Mr. Heard in the future.

I'm sorry to read about this. I had to quit playing in clubs also because of Noise Induced Hearing Loss. It's absolutely devastating. I wear hearing aids in both ears and can not communicate without them. New studies indicate that TSS (Temporary Threshold Shift) the muffled feeling or ringing after loud exposures that Larry talked about in his interview, are no longer temporary. Studies show that even after 1 loud exposure, nerves beyond the haircells that transmit signals to the brain die off and the loss shows up years latter. I work for Etymotic Research now, a company that makes products for the ears. DJ's can protect their hearing and still enjoy their performances and music. I've dedicated my life to help spread the word to music lovers everywhere. Take care of what you have! Learn about noise exposure, how loud is too loud. You can continue to enjoy music for a lifetime if take a few moments to learn about the risks.

It's better to hear new music from Larry than to have him spin. So we are not losing him completely.

respect to Larry. looking forward to the future! sx

did no one tell him about the fantastic custom made ear plugs that allow the sound to come through clearly, just about 40db quieter?

This is a logical move for Larry anyway. He always saw himself as a musician first and foremost. Marshall Jefferson once said that Larry's music was in another league (compared to his own).
